There were some big surprises in the early action at the WTT Champions Series event in Frankfurt this week. Top seed Hugo Calderano fought past his first-round opponent Jang Woojin but lost to Simon Gauzy in the next round – the second early departure for Calderano in as many weeks. Second seed Tomokazu Harimoto suffered the same fate, defeating Jonathan Groth in the round of 32 before falling to Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the round of 16.
American Kanak Jha achieved another milestone, defeating Euro 16 champion Darko Jorgic. Jha continues to put in strong performances on the tour and this week he secured another $6,000 purse and another 90 ranking points. Jha continues to flirt with the Top 20, currently ranked No. 23, but only 150 points separate him from the world No. 18, so American fans can expect him to move up a few spots in the rankings next week. Jha fell in the Round of 16 this week, losing to Japanese teenager Sora Matsushima (who has risen all the way to No. 13 in a very short time – and may be in the Top 10 before this year ends.
The quarter-finals are now scheduled for Saturday, with Simon Gauzy taking on Lee Sang Su (both fresh off wins, Gauzy against Calderano and Lee against Lin Yun-Ju). Anton Kallberg had successive setbacks: he defeated Truls Moregard and then Alexis Lebrun. Kallberg now moves on to take on Dang Qiu. Anders Lind takes on Felix Lebrun. And Sora Matsushima will face Dimitrij Ovtcharov. The semi-finals and finals will be played on Sunday.
