The opening day showed the very best of Olympic table tennis drama. Eduard Ionescu from Romania pulled out what many called the escape of the games, clawed back from 0-3 and saved six match points to beat Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna with 4-3. Moments later on the adjacent table, Alberto Mino from Ecuador corresponded to that comeback performance and placed four consecutive games against Finn Luu in Finland for another 4-3 victory.

But it was the favorite of the home team that really ignited the Arena. France’s Prithika Pavade had the overcrowded South Paris Arena 4 on their feet with a 4-1 victory commander over Iran’s Neda Shahsavari. The atmosphere was electric, with French fans already dreaming of medal options when the Pavade tournament reached the perfect start.

Historymakers and legends

The opening day was not just about the drama – it was about writing history. Nepal’s Santoo Shrestha became the first table tennis player to ever represent his nation at the Olympic Games, while Moldova Vladislav Ursu reached the same milestone for his country. The Fathimath Ali van de Maldives has also left her mark as the first Olympic table tennis competitor in her country.

In the meantime, Legends of the Sport started their treasure hunts for more Olympic glory. Six times Olympic medal winner Dimitrij OVTCharov from Germany launched his campaign for a seventh medal with a convincing 4-0 victory, while ‘Supermom’ Britt Eerland of the Netherlands continued her remarkable comeback story with a dominant victory.

Mixed double drama

The mixed doubles competition provided its own share of tension, with top seeds Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha by China from China and a statement with a 4-0 win. The biggest shock, however, came when Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong of DPR Korea the second seeds Hina Hayata and Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan stunned 4-1, who sent ripples through the tournament loting.

The day ended with the French Hartzeer as home favorites Jia Nan Yuan and Alexis Lebrun missed closely and lost 4-2 to the Taipei couple Lin Yun-Ju and Chen Szu-Yu for their passionate supporters.
