A Thatcher-loving Heavy Metal Drummer: Meet the first female PM-in-Waiting of Japan

Sanae Takaichi, the newly elected and loyal conservative head of the prevailing liberal Democratic party, is expected to be the first female prime minister of Japan.
The 64-year-old, who won the leadership elections of the party on Saturday, has positioned himself as a hardline leader aimed at national defense and economic security.
She saw the competition from the candidate of generation change Shinjiro Koizumi, the 44-year-old surfing son of a former prime minister and the experienced Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Once confirmed by the Parliament – as most likely – Takaichi becomes the first female head of the government of the country and the fifth leader of Japan in as many years.

Takaichi has repeatedly referred to Thatcher as a source of inspiration, with reference to her strong character and beliefs in combination with her “female warmth”.

She said she met the conservative Thatcher, a division in British politics known as “The Iron Lady”, at a symposium shortly before the death of Thatcher in 2013.

Takichi’s politics

In an attempt to claw back voters, Takaichi has adopted a difficult attitude in the field of immigration and foreign tourists – both of which emerged as important issues in the LDP leader race.
Once a drummer in a college Heavy Metal Band, she is a vocal critic of China and his military structure in the Asia pacific.
Takaichi enjoys passionate support in the conservative wing of the LDP and under fellow followers of murdered ex-prime minister Minister Shinzo Abe.

She supports aggressive monetary relaxation and large tax expenditure, following the policy of her political mentor “Abenomics”, which, if implemented again, could rattle.

She has also expressed her strong concern about crime and the economic influence of foreigners in Japan, in which there is stricter rules-a movement that analysts say is an attempt to regain voters who have fled the LDP to a new nationalist party with anti-immigration reports.

With regard to the rates, she told a panel discussion this month that she will not shy away from negotiating with the United States if the deal is implemented in a way that has been deemed harmful or unfair in Japan.

Takaichi promises ‘Nordic levels’ of women in parliament

Some of her supporters considered her selection as a turning point in the Men -dominated Politics in Japan. Takaichi has made a daring promise to eliminate the number of women in the cabinet to parliamentary countries.

But although her election “would be a step forward for the participation of women in politics”, according to Sadafumi Kawwato, emeritus professor of the University of Tokyo, she has shown little tendency to fight against patriarchal standards.

Takaichi’s views on gender place its right of an already conservative LDP.
She opposes the revision of a 19th-century law that is required to share married couples to share the same last name, a rule that results in overwhelming women who take the name of their husbands.
Japan was 118 out of 148 in the report of the World Economic Forum in 2025 Gender GAP report mainly because of the under-representation of women in the government, while Iceland, Finland and Norway occupy the top three places.
