Welcome to playing Smart, a regular game allowance column with golf.com that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.
As most golfers know, what you do in the backswing has one enormous Impact on what you do in the Downswing. As Newton’s third law says: “For each action there is an equal opposite reaction.” The same principle applies in the golf swing.
We usually hear Newton cited in the golf swing when we talk about land reaction forces and generating strength. But the same idea can be applied in the backwing-downswing relationship.
However, many recreational golfers do not make this connection. They are so concerned about the way their swing looks and feels in the Downswing that they neglect the most important backswing, which leads to many unnecessary errors.
One of the most important Backswing guidelines is to keep the clubhead outside The hands when the axle is parallel to the ground after the collection meals. This ensures that the club is on the plane and in. A good position to continue turning to the top.
However, sometimes recreational golfers (including this writer) will exaggerate this backswing feeling – and it leads to some annoying swing errors. In the video below, the people from Athletic Motion Golf show how this error appears and how to repair it.
A sneaky reason for your slice
Keeping the club head out of the hands during the Downswing is a great swing feeling, but when you exaggerate the feeling, it creates problems yourself. Sometimes when golfers try too hard to keep the club head out of the hands, they keep their trail hand on the grip too long, which later causes problems in the backswing.
“You see this ‘reverse roll’ in an attempt to keep [the clubface] Less open ”, says Golf Top 100 teacher Shaun Webb.” And then nine times out of ten they are a little flop [the clubface] Open.”
As soon as you “open” the club face at the top of the swing, golfers tend to pull their hands on an outdoor path to start the Downswing. This sends the club head out of the hands during the Downswing, which creates mature conditions for a weak fading or even a slice.
So what should you do to correct the error? Think of a handshake.
While you make your collection meals and bring the shaft parallel to the ground, you think of the position where your head hand would be in if you reached over your body to shake someone’s hand.
“The left hand pressure brings you to such a perfect place,” says Webb.
If you are someone who keeps the club head a bit overtarious Outside the hands during the backswing, try this swing. After the collection meals, it will bring you into an excellent position to keep the club perfectly on the plane to the top, so that you can make a good downswing.
