Success in the major competitions missed Lewin Diaz during his three seasons at the Miami Marlins, but that has not been the case since he went to Korea to play for the Samsung Lions of the KBO. The 28-year-old first Honkman broke the Slug records of the competition.
Lewin Diaz’s term of office in the Majors
Originally signed as an amateur -free agent from the Dominican Republic by the Minnesota Twins, Diaz was traded to the Marlins during the Trade Deadline of 2019 for Reliever Sergio Romo. He would make a brief debut during the Pandemic season of 2020 and appeared in 14 games.
Diaz played in 112 games between 2020-22 with the Marlins and only hit .181/.227/.340 (54 Ops+) with 13 home runs over 343 plate performances.
2023 was brought back to the small competitions with the Triple-A branch of Baltimore, before Diaz chose to play in the Mexican league at the start of the 2024 season. He had hit well there and attracted the attention of scouts in the KBO for the Lions for the last month of the season.
Diaz rewrites the record books
Offensive, Diaz brought things to a completely new level in 2025. The Lefty hits .302/.368/.625 to 598 plate performances. Diaz has added 26 Doubles, 48 home runs and 144 RBI on the year.
The Home Run record of KBO is 56, set by Seung-Yeop Lee in 2003. Lee stood opposite the 50-homer Mark a second time, while two other Korean Sluggers have reached the milestone. Diaz’s 48 Home Runs bind the brand by Yamaico Navarro in 2015 (also for the Lions), which is the record by a player born abroad.
Byungho Park established the KBO RBI record, driving in 146 points in 2015. Diaz has all the goal of a player born abroad and has a good chance to surpass park in this season last week.
The Lions still have six games on their schedule before the late season.
