I’ve kept hearing that this season is apparently a disaster for Newcastle United and an unprecedented success for Sunderland.
Are the facts really correct and do they support this view?
Journalists are so keen to highlight this ultra-positive view of Sunderland and at the same time (in my opinion) go over the top in a negative way about Newcastle United.
I also find it very funny how the Mackems are presented as penniless paupers who are ‘successful’ against all odds.
No one denies that Newcastle United have spent money since we finally got rid of Mike Ashley after a decade and a half of chronic underspending, both on and off the pitch.
However, when do you ever hear that Sunderland spent over £160 million last summer, a figure far higher than any promoted club had ever spent before gaining promotion to the Premier League.
Anyway, I’ve been digging into what’s happened so far in 2025/26.
A few Newcastle United and Sunderland stats you may not have heard mentioned… (correct as of the morning of Saturday 17 January 2026):
