The student wanted the assignments.
And the professor, as the children say, understood the assignment.
Could Matt McCarthy have responded to Boston Bracken’s email unhappily? Or short? Or left unopened? He could have done that. But instead, he replied in the manner we are going to share below. It’s okay. It may also make you wish he was your teacher.
The answer came afterwards Brokea freshman member of the Arizona State men’s golf team, messaged McCarthy, one of his professors at ASU, when Bracken played last month in the Wohali classic at Wohali Golf Course in Utah. Under the subject line “Boston Bracken Missing Class,” that note read:
Hello professor,
My name is Boston Bracken. I’m on the ASU men’s golf team. Below you will find the itinerary for all our tournaments.
We are currently in Utah for the Wohali tournament. I will keep up to date with all the canvas work. If there is anything important I should pay attention to, please let me know!
Thank you!!
Boston Vomiting
Kudos to Bracken for taking responsibility.
Then came the answer.
There’s a wave in it. There is humor. There is support. Here it is:
Hello Boston,
Is there anything important you should take into account? Are you kidding me dude!? Here, I’ll do it Coach [Matt] Thurmonds job for him: (I can’t believe you’re asking me, I only have an 8 handicap, but here goes.)
Wohali Golf Club is long!: Over 7,500 yards means long holes, especially from the back tees. Requires distance off the tee and solid play with long iron/fairway wood.
Adjusting for Elevation/Terrain: Being in the Utah/Wasatch Back mountains, there will be elevation changes: uphill and downhill shots, uneven terrain, possibly thin air at higher elevations. These make club selection more complex and require precision.
Consider design and architecture: Woholi was designed by Dave Boyden, so the course has a mix of challenge and beauty. Holes vary quite a bit, with forced carries, visual hazards and strategic elements.
In the future, please direct your concerns to Coach Thurmond! A few more things: 1. Tell your teammates to complete the Dirty Thirty! (It gives me anxiety.) 2. Look for me when you get back if you need me to catch up. 3. GO DEVILS!
A short time later, ASU’s social media team shared the exchange and the Twitter post can be found here and the Instagram post can be found here. This one also came from among the Instagram comments Broke:
The word ‘goat’, along with a goat emoji, preceded by a link to McCarthy’s account.
Well written.
