The Philadelphia 76ers are off to a good start this season, winning all four of their games so far to kick off the campaign with an impeccable record. Their second-ranked offense, boosted by the dazzling production of both Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, as well as rock-solid contributions from Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Joel Embiid (despite being on a minutes restriction), has catapulted them to first place in the East early on.
At the time of writing, the 76ers are just a hair below the Rockets in offensive rating. Their scoring attack has become so potent that it has single-handedly overcome the team’s rotten defense, which ranks fifth in the league. And a big part of their offensive surge is their vast improvement from beyond the arc.
Last season, Philadelphia ranked near the bottom of the league in all three-point shooting statistics, in goals, attempts and conversion rate. This time around, they seemed to put a lot of emphasis on improving their perimeter shooting as a collective, ranking at or near the top of the association in several three-point shooting areas.
The 76ers have made a splash from beyond the arc to start the season
The 76ers have knocked down 41.9 percent of their three-point attempts so far, easily leading the league at this early point. Even more impressive is that they are doing this while hitting 16.3 triples per outing, which currently ranks third among all teams.
Last season the 76ers scored just 12.7 per game. While their current returns will likely come back down to earth, the team has more than enough ammunition to hover around their current target in terms of their three-point shooting percentage and performance.
Maxey is literally functioning as a locked-in flamethrower at the moment, while Grimes has remained rock solid from beyond the arc. The same goes for Oubre, who has shot the ball well to start the year. Edgecombe and Embiid haven’t been shy about shooting from Rainbow Country either.
There’s also the returning Jared McCain, one of the best pure shooters on the roster. His presence alone will make their strike zone much more stable. We also can’t forget Paul George, who is still a powerful shooter in his own right.
The Philadelphia 76ers will not go undefeated this season – no team will. However, if they want to win as many games as possible, they need to maintain their current three-point shooting competence. Offense is their calling card right now, and continued success from downtown will allow them to reach much greater heights, especially during the regular season.
