Less than a month away from the February 5 trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers have yet to make a move, or are even strongly rumored that they are on the verge of making one. The silence was eerie this time, but people who know how this franchise works probably aren’t even breaking a sweat. After all, the Daryl Morey factor is still present.
As everyone knows, among all the executives in the NBA, there is no one more fanatical than Morey when it comes to making a splash in the trade market. While he has his mistakes and miscalculations, more often than not his trades have made the team better. As such, it’s unlikely the front office he leads will just sit around waiting for the deadline to pass.
The 76ers are in a unique position this season to explore low-risk trades. They have the necessary salaries to make the money work, and some of their more sought-after trade candidates also have expiring contracts. Furthermore, unlike most contenders with experienced cores, Philly actually has a deep pool of draft picks.
The 76ers will likely make a trade before the deadline thanks to Daryl Morey
While he certainly has a tendency to trade during the season, Morey isn’t just someone who develops a desire to trade and trade just for the sake of doing it. But if there’s one thing for sure, it’s that the 76ers will definitely look active and stay on the phone as much as possible.
It doesn’t have to be grand or landscape-changing; the 76ers are already at the top of their pecking order. Realistically, the front office will be aware of some of the role players available to take on. In fact, it looks like they already have connected to a certain team for that purpose.
Philly still has some glaring roster issues despite their overwhelming raw talent on paper. The defense is still very inconsistent. Their outside shooting remains a concern against teams with aggressive perimeter defenders. The game play is still lacking. Their depth is always in the danger zone due to their injury-prone players.
As such, 76ers fans can expect (and already do) that Daryl Morey will take charge of the brain trust up top to put the team in a better position to make a deep playoff run. And they can also rest assured that given his pedigree, he can guide the front office to pull off a smart trade.
