After taking a look at this current version of the Philadelphia 76ers roster, it’s safe to say that Daryl Morey certainly showed some degree of favoritism. He’ll never admit it, but there are certain players who are still part of the lineup simply because of their longstanding relationships with the old director.
An example? Look no further than Eric Gordon, who is now in his 18th season as a pro. He’ll turn 37 in a few months, but the front office willingly handed him another one-year deal over the summer, despite everyone expecting him to be the odd man out among the team’s then-pending free agents.
But to the surprise of many, the front office decided to go with the veteran guard again. However, with each passing game it becomes even more clear that he no longer has a place in the team. Despite them, he did not receive even a second of playing time during the team’s first match missing the services of Jared McCain.
As such, the 76ers need to stop delaying the inevitable and show Gordon the way out as soon as possible. It’s the only logical thing to do with the veteran.
The 76ers need to part ways with Eric Gordon as soon as possible
By continuing to play away from home for Gordon, the 76ers are only wasting a roster spot that could be much better off if given to another deserving and younger player. Gordon is a marksman and is no longer someone who can put a lot of pressure on the opponent’s defense.
Gordon is just a one-trick pony at this point, and even his best attribute, his three-point shooting, can be replicated by many players still available. He can no longer take the ball to the rim as he has in years past, and he has never been one to demonstrate acumen as a playmaker.
In defense he is a traffic cone. He’s far too small for the coaching staff to viably tie him to bigger players in their transfer programs. He is a liability in that regard and will remain so as his career begins to fade.
The 76ers are not a retirement home, however, and with the roster still needing to sort out some issues, parting ways with an unusable piece in Eric Gordon will free up the requisite roster spot for them to even consider a move.
