650 hp Genesis GV60 Magma officially unveiled

It’s an easy car to forget, the Genesis GV60, partly because not many were sold. But it’s also a very good car, a different take on the E-GMP underpinnings used by the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, with its own flourishes and appeal. Now the Genesis, like the cars it is related to, gets its flagship: this is the 650 hp GV60 Magma.

It actually arrives as part of a mini relaunch; Genesis as a brand has now been around for 10 years and the focus over the next ten years will be on ‘Luxury High Performance’. So here comes the GMR-001 race car, plus the promise of ‘refined elegance and superior performance’, and now the first Magma production model.

Luc Donckerwolke, President and Chief Creative Officer of Genesis, said: “Magma unveils a new facet of Genesis, one that elevates the brand to true luxury through performance. It shows how emotion and precision can coexist in perfect harmony, defining a more confident and mature expression of Genesis. Through Magma, we inject adrenaline into the Genesis DNA, while maintaining the elegance and balance that define true luxury.” For the layman, this means it’s really very orange, 20mm lower, a bit wider and has a slightly strange spoiler that reportedly generates significant downforce. A standard GV60 will always turn your head; Imagine seeing this for the first time.

Many of the parts that made both the Ioniq 5N and EV6 GT stand out can be found in the Magma, which is encouraging. There’s 609bhp with the twin motor setup, or 650bhp with overboost, meaning 0-120mph in 10.9 seconds and 164mph at full speed. The Electronic Control Suspension, electronic limited slip differential and Virtual Gear Shift that worked so well in the other cars are now here. Genesis also adds Active Noise Control, sound-insulating glass and reinforced door seals for refinement, alongside ‘Hydro-G’ bushings for reduced vibration and suspension with an ‘End-of-Travel control system’, which works a lot like a smart bump stop. Let’s see; but expectations are high given the standard Hyundai and Kia have set. Upgraded brakes sit behind the 21-inch wheels.

As proven with the other two cars, there’s a lot of configurability in a GV60 Magma. There are Sprint, GT and MY modes, with the latter serving as an individual setting to adjust the ESC, e-LSD and ‘other performance parameters’. There’s also (told you) a Magma mode for the dashboard, with vital temperatures, G-force and speed prominently featured. The rest of the interior features orange accents, Chamude (it looks like suede) for the seats and console, plus dark metal switches. There is no doubt that it is a standard copy…

JosĂ© Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai & Genesis, said: “Genesis reached one million sales worldwide faster than any luxury brand in history. Magma represents our statement that the next decade will be even more important. We’re not just building high-performance vehicles; we’re redefining what a luxury, high-performance brand can be when Korean innovation meets global ambition.” This means that Magmas are also sold everywhere; After a launch in the domestic market early next year, the 650 hp GV60 will come to Europe and North America later in 2026. Presumably also in other colors, but who knows. Maybe you shouldn’t commit to an Ioniq 5N right now, just to be sure…
