Miami University (OH) has produced a lot of NHL talent in 47-year history and a handful of his alumni has reached the pinnacle of the sport.
Here is a look at the six former Redhawks that hoisted the Stanley Cup.
And Boyle (1 Stanley Cup)
A striking two-way defender, then Boyle won his lonely Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004. Known for his Puck-Moving Power and Power-Play game, Boyle played more than 1,000 NHL matches and also won Olympic Gold with Team Canda, SanHers, SanHers, and Time Time brought time. Kevyn Adams (1 Stanley Cup)
Kevyn Adams played in Miami from 1992 to 1996, appeared in 159 games over four full seasons and became one of the early stars of the program. He played two seasons together with Boyle and was suitable for two different head coaches in Miami. George Gwozdecky was his coach for his first two seasons before he left the job of the University of Denver, where he stayed for 19 seasons and NCAA championships won in 2004 and 2005. Adams then played his last two seasons under Mazzoleni.
Adams was set up in the first round, 25th General, by the Boston Bruins in the NHL design of 1993. A skilled center with high hockey IQ, he led Miami in scoring in each of his last three seasons and served as a team captain in 1995-96. He obtained NCAA (CCHA) Second All-Star Team Self-part in 1994-95 and ended his Redhawks career that was bound for seventh place in school history in goals (69) and fourth in points (172).
His contributions helped Miami to earn his first NCAA tournament in 1993 and he was admitted to the Redhawks Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
Adams then played more than 500 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. His biggest moment came in 2006 with the Hurricanes, where he won the Stanley Cup while serving as one of the team’s reliable two -way contracts.
Adams moved to management after his retirement in 2008 with Chicago. Since 2020 he has been as general manager of the Buffalo SabresWhere he is currently being confronted with the task to rebuild a wrestling franchise that has not made the play -offs since 2011.
Jeff Zatkoff (1 Stanley Cup)
Jeff Zatkoff played three seasons at Miami University from 2005 to 2008 and appeared in 100 games and led the Redhawks to several NCAA tournament performances under the then head coach Enrico Blasi. He became the primary goalkeeper of the program during his second-year student and junior seasons and placed a .931 savings percentage (SV%) in the 2007-08 season, which was among the best in the nation. That season he was named the first All-Star team of NCAA (CCHA) and the second All-American team of the NCAA (West).
Zatkoff was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the third round, 74th General, from the NHL design of 2006. After he had left Miami, he started his professional career in the Kings organization and spent several seasons in the AHL who developed his game.
He later signed at the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he made his NHL debut in the 2013-14 season. Zatkoff played an important depth role for Pittsburgh in the 2015-16 season, started Game 1 of the first round of the Stanley Cup play-offs against the Rangers and won the victory. Although he was the third goalkeeper of the team for a large part of the late season behind Marc-André Fleury, he was part of the schedule of the Penguins who won the Stanley Cup that season.
Zatkoff is the only former goalkeeper of Miami who won the Stanley Cup. During his NHL career, he appeared in 48 games in the regular season and placed a record of 18-21-4 with a 2.89 goal-to-average (GAA) and a .908 SV%, which also appeared in two Playoff games. He went 1-1 and placed a 0.908 SV% and a 3.07 gaa.
Zatkoff retired after the 2019-2020 season with the Straubing Tigers in German Del, in which he closed an up and down career in which he played in all three North American professional competitions and even abroad.
Reilly Smith (1 Stanley Cup)
Reilly Smith played three seasons at Miami University from 2009 to 2012 under Blasi and developed into one of the most dynamic attackers in the program. As a first-year student, he helped Miami to win the CCHAGRUME Seasonal Championship 2009-2010, which contributed an important attack in the run of the team to the NCAA tournament. Smith raised his game in 2010-11 and earned NCAA (CCHA) champion Honors and a place on the first All-Star team of NCAA (CCHA).
During his junior season in 2011-12, Smith served as a captain of Miami and produced one of the best offensive seasons in school history. He repeated the first All-Star team selection as a NCAA (CCHA), was named the first all-American team of NCAA (west) and became a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. During his three seasons in Oxford, Smith played 121 games, scored 66 goals and added 56 assists for 122 points.
After leaving Miami, Smith quickly went up the professional ranks. He was appointed AHL Rookie of the month in December 2012 before he settled as a reliable NHL scorer. His career included stops with the Dallas stars, Bruins, Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights.
The biggest moment of Smith came during the 2022-23 season, when he helped Vegas to the first Stanley Cup. In Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final, Smith and fellow Redhawk Alec Martinez each scored in less than two minutes to extend the Vegas lead to 4-1 above the Florida Panthers. Smith’s goal was the Cup-Klinching goal, the sealing of the very first Stanley Cup for the Golden Knights franchise.
By 1,036 career -NHL games, Smith has a total of 636 points for 15 seasons and the record of most Playoff points (83) from Every former Redhawk After the late season 2025.
Smith is still active and will be at Vegas for the 2025-26 season after signing a one-year contract, $ 2 million this season. He bounced around the NHL during his career, but in a powerhouse team like Vegas he has a strong chance of lifting another Stanley Cup.
Blake Coleman (2 Stanley Cups)
Blake Coleman spent four seasons at Miami University from 2011 to 2015, after an excellent career in the USHL (United States Hockey League). He was part of the Redhawks-Team 2012-2013 that won the CCHA regular seasonal championship and played an important role in the transition from Miami to the NCHC under Blasi.
In his senior season (2014-2015), Coleman served as an alternative captain and led Redhawks to the NCAA (NCHC) championship. He was appointed as the NCAA (NCHC) All-Tournament team and earned the MVP subjessions tournament.
That team remains the last Miami team to qualify for the NCAA tournament and falls in the regional semi-final in a wild 7-5 loss for Providence, a match in which the Redhawks almost attracted an incredible comeback in the third period. Since that season, the program has difficulty returning to that level of national relevance.
Coleman’s style is always defined by physicality. After making his NHL debut with the New Jersey Devils in the 2016-17 season, he was three and a half seasons at the Devils before being traded on Lightning in February 2020. That movement was the stage for back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, first in the COVID “Bubble” season of 2019-2020, then in 2020-21. During the Playoff -Run of 2020 he led all players in hits with 126.
Coleman also won a bronze medal with Team USA at the IIHF World Championship 2018.
Coleman is now the 2025-26 season and is an alternative captain at the Calgary Flames, a role that he also had last season. During 10 AHL seasons, Coleman played 689 games, recorded 321 points and still has a lot of career for him.
Alec Martinez (3 Stanley Cups)
One of the most famous former Redhawks, Alec Martinez, has won the Stanley Cup three times, twice with the Kings (2012, 2014) and once with the Golden Knights (2023). He has a distinction with having most Stanley cups of every former Redhawk.
Martinez is best known for its famous double overtime Stanley Cup-winning goal in 2014 that the kings beyond the Rangers in Game 5.
He also scored the overtime winner in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final against the Chicago Blackhawks, which sent the kings to the final.
Before his NHL success, Martinez played three seasons in Miami from 2005 to 2008 under Blasi, where he had 67 points in 123 ADA games.
He scored many memorable goals such as a Redhawk, including the final goal in the Old Goggin Ice Arena in March 2006 against West -Michigan, and the Overtime winner in the CCHA and finals of 2008.
He was set up in the fourth round, 95th General, by the Kings in 2007. During his NHL career, Martinez played regular season matches in 862, Tally 88 goals and 201 assists (289 points) and added 14 goals and 23 assists in 131 Playoff games. In the AHL he was suitable for 163 competitions with the Manchester Monarchs, set 20 goals and count 49 assists.
Martinez officially retired as Blackhawk on April 12, 2025 and closed a career that included more than 1,000 professional games.
Miami’s legacy looks forward
When you look at the state of the 2025 program, second-year head coach Anthony Noreen has often said that he wants to put Miami back on the map and fill the walls of Goggin Ice Center with more NHL names.
