After a tough road trip, the New Jersey Devils headed home to take on the Detroit Red Wings. In a game full of drama, the Devils snapped a three-game skid and won 4-3.

“We are all brothers here”
Devils netminder Jacob Markstrom has struggled mightily this season. Entering the night, he had a 3.83 goals against average (GAA) and an .864 save percentage (SV%). Tonight, he stopped 33 of 36 (0.916%), including a host of high-danger opportunities as the Red Wings dominated the pace of play from the second period on. Devils’ defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler said his netminder was “like a ninja.”
By money puckhe stopped +2.74 goals above expectations – his second-best performance of the season. And to top it all off, Markstrom was one of several Devils who got involved in a giant scrum after the final horn as tensions completely boiled over. It’s a moment the team can certainly build on.
Mayhem at the end of the game when a scrum breaks out. Red Wings not happy with Siegenthaler. Hischier and Larkin want to get involved, Talbot and Markstrom look like they want to be involved.

“We’re a tight-knit group and we have a lot of fun together here day in and day out,” Devils forward Connor Brown said. “That usually leads to us standing up for each other.”
Siegenthaler, who was often in the middle of various scrums, shared the same sentiment: “We are all brothers here (…) when someone is put under pressure, we stand up for each other and we are there for each other. And I think that’s what we showed tonight.”
Cooking at home
The Devils are now 8-0-1 at Prudential Center – a nine-game winning streak to start the season. They are almost impossible to beat in their shed, which is a relief for a team that has left some serious home points on the table in recent seasons.
At “The Rock,” the Devils have scored 3.33 goals per game, surpassing their road total of 2.85 per game.
But here’s the standout stat: At home, they’ve only conceded 2.11 goals per game. best brand in the NHL. Along the way, they have allowed 3.69 per game – the fifth worst mark in the competition. That’s one big difference.
“We were just a lot tighter at home,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We just didn’t give up a lot of freebies [at home]…and in many of our road games we’ve opened up the ice and allowed the other teams to skate through it and get breakaways, 2-on-1s and odd-man rushes. That’s a recipe for losing and that’s where inconsistency has arisen, but luckily for us that hasn’t happened in this building. We have shown time and time again, especially in this building, that we can play. We know what it takes, but doing it every day in the NHL is hard, and that’s the hill we have to climb.”
The impact of Cody Glass
It was a bit of a surprise that Cody Glass was even available tonight, given his “week-to-week” designation just nine days ago. But it was certainly a boost for the Devils; for the second time this season, Glass scored in the match after returning from injury.
It’s not just the offense that makes him effective, although Glass is on an 82-game 30-goal pace, which is certainly nothing to scoff at. But Glass continues to assert himself as one of the better defensive forwards in the league.
In the absence of Jack Hughes, their depth has really been tested. During their recent road trip, without Glass, the bottom six slumped frequently and struggled to generate much.
Tonight his line had two 5v5 goals, as both Connor Brown also found rope. That’s as many 5v5 goals as the whole team had in the final three games of the road trip.

“It’s great for that [Cody]” said Keefe. “It’s never easy to miss time, and never easy to deal with injuries. But we won a lot when he played for us.”
Break glass in an emergency? Literally, the Devils are 9-1-1 when Glass is in the lineup.
Come on
The Devils – now 14-7-1 – will conclude their short two-game homestand with a matchup against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
