Forward Mikael Backlund, now 36 years old, has spent his entire NHL career at the Calgary Flames. The captain became free agent on July 1, 2026 and had enough time to sign a new deal, but he received negotiations as soon as possible. On September 17, he agreed to a two -year contract worth $ 3.25 million per season.

Locked in Calgary until 2027–28, assuming that Backlund does not run a major injury or retires before his deal expires, he will play the games of the franchise of all time. Only 153 back of Jarome Iginla, that is only two seasons in games – not feasible for the experienced workhorse.

In addition to a record setting, Backlund is still an important member of the schedule of the Flames. Last season, on average, he took a little less than 19 minutes of ice age per game and recorded 32 points in 76 games in a low scoring Calgary team. His two-way impact ensures that a cap of $ 3.25 million affects a no-brainer, not even about the value of his leadership and loyalty.
Given the age of Backlund, there is a chance that this is the last contract of his career. If so, the Flames hope that he will supervise a transitional period for the centuries. Young people Zayne Parekh and Dustin Wolf settle themselves as some of the best players in the competition in their positions, the Prospect Pool is developing well and general manager Craig Conroy continues to be well set up.
