With NHL training camps that will be open next week, we are days removed from training camp grilles to be announced of all 32 teams. While the most excitement about seeing prospects, as well as free agent and trade acquisitions for the first time, most training camp grilles are not complete without a few players in Tryout agreements, also known as PTOs.
The Detroit Red Wings have been successful with PTOs in recent years. Austin Watson saw the most recent example with the team with a try-out, and his physicality and experience eventually earned him a two-way contract to use those tools in both the NHL and the American Hockey League (AHL). Although a PTO does not always result in an NHL contract, the players can help those similarities to arrange schedules and emphasize the needs within the organizational depth card.
With that in mind, here are a few players who can focus the red wings with a PTO this year.
Craig Smith
Fans must be familiar with this name, because he finished last season as a member of the Red Wings. Craig Smith, a 36-year-old veteran, was taken from the Chicago Blackhawks In the Handelsdeadline Deal that also sent goalkeeper Petr Mrázek to Detroit. In 19 games he was only two points, both assists, while on average he had a little more than 10 minutes a night in Ice Age.

Smith is a veteran of 987 regular seasonal competitions in the NHL and 83 play -off games. He would compete for a role in the lower six of Detroit, as well as on the penalty murder, but he would not be an important threat to the young players of the organization who could also fulfill those roles.

Jani Hakanpääää
The 33-year-old defender Jani Hakanpää was limited last season to just two games with the Toronto Maple Leafs due to a knee injury that eventually resulted in an operation. The red wings do not have so physically present on their blue line since Prime Niklas Kronwall, and even Kronwall did not have the Moster -Build that Hakanpää has.
The red wings need another right -handed defender on their blue line, and his physical game would go together with the aim of the organization to become a lot harder to play against. That is at least worth a PTO, but it can quickly change a contract, depending on what his knee looks like.
Andreas Athanasiou
Another name that should be known at Red Wing -Fans, Andreas Athanasiou spent the first four and a half seasons of his NHL career in Detroit before he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers at the Handelsdeadline of 2020. Since then he brought two seasons with the Blings Kings.
A fourth round pick in the 2012 design, the best season of the career of Athanasiou was the 2018-19 season-last full season at the Red Wings-Ten he recorded 30 goals and 54 points. He had 20 goals and 40 points in his first season in Chicago, but he ended his time in the Blackhawks organization with the AHL’s Rockford Icehogs and collected 27 points in 30 games.
Athanasiou’s game was always about speed and attack. He is the type of player that you invite to camp to compete with prospects such as Nate Danielson and Amadeus Lombardi for a role in the middle six of the Red Wings. With nearly 500 regular seasonal competitions under his belt, Athanasiou could be a good “pinch hitter” in the attack when the team needs a spark. If he is willing to accept a two -way contract as Watson did last season, Athanasiou would also be a huge boost for the attack of the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Training camp only a few days away
With the training camp that starts soon and the preseason starts shortly thereafter, it will be interesting to see who visits Red Wings Training Camp and who will play with who and in what role. We must have a good idea of what the line -up of Detroit could look like as soon as the training camp starts next week.
