3 potential free agent destinations for David Kampf

3 potential free agent destinations for David Kampf

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has decided to release David Kampf, and now the defensive center is considering his next move.
Kampf fell down the Leafs’ depth chart, ending last season after head coach Craig Berube lost confidence in Kampf’s ability to be a defensive stopper. He played just one of the Maple Leafs’ Stanley Cup Playoff games ending last year, and it was clear some decisions had to be made during training camp. Kampf ends up on the outside looking in once camp breaks, gets demoted to the American Hockey League and decides the bus rides aren’t for him. And here we are.
The Maple Leafs terminated Kampf’s contract and rid himself of two more seasons for $2.4 million AAV. It was one of Brad Treliving’s worst moves as GM to extend Kampf shortly after taking over for Kyle Dubas. While their relationship has been positive for the Leafs, Kampf’s lack of production has had serious consequences for the Leafs’ organization.
So, where to go next? Kampf is an unrestricted free agent, he is 30 years old and with This is reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger that Kampf’s decision will likely come Sunday, here are three teams that could ultimately pay for the veteran’s services.

Montreal Canadians

While the Canadiens have had a solid start to the season, posting a 10-5-2 record through the first seventeen games, they could use some help defensively. GM Kent Hughes has been looking for a center all summer and is rumored to be interested in making some big moves to upgrade his roster up front. Kampf could be an under-the-radar addition to the Habs’ bottom six, which could help solidify their depth in the middle of the ice.

Kampf will have to settle for a minimum contract in the league, so money is not an issue here at all. The Canadiens are very familiar with Kampf’s game and his ability, when at the top of his game, to be a shutdown centre, kill penalties and be defensively responsible in all three zones. It’s nothing flashy, that’s for sure, but when Kampf is on, he’s quietly effective.

Montreal ranks eighth-worst in the league in goals allowed per game, and they rank in the middle of the pack when it comes to penalty kill, so it makes a lot of sense for Hughes to at least reach out to Kampf to see if there’s any interest in joining the Maple Leafs rival.

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks are a team to watch in the Kampf sweepstakes as they lack organizational depth at center. While it wouldn’t be a “sexy” addition for Vancouver, it could have a solid impact on their fourth line.

The Canucks rank last in the NHL losing only 66.1% of their penalties, and that is certainly an area where Kampf can be effective, so it makes sense for General Manager Patrik Allvin to reach out to Kampf about an NHL contract. Our colleagues from Canucks Army spoke of Kampf’s potential towards the west and said the following:

David Kampf’s contract with the Leafs has been terminated and he is a free agent as of today. Would the 30-year-old, defense-oriented center be a good fit in Vancouver? Presented by | Pacific Toyota Dealers

Vancouver has dealt with some injury issues early in the season and is in need of a new defensive center. Kampf fits the bill, he’s a low-risk, mid-reward signee, and someone who would be an upgrade over what the Canucks are currently dealing with among their fourth-line options.

Pittsburgh penguins

We all know Kyle Dubas likes familiarity. The Penguins have surprised many this season with their strong start, and while Dubas is essentially trying to get his roster younger while staying competitive, Pittsburgh could use Kampf for their fourth line.

The Pens have been dealing with some injury issues in their bottom six, and Kampf could be an upgrade over some of their current options as he has a lot more experience, plays within himself, and if he’s able to get his game back to where it was two years ago, it could be a valuable depth piece for the Penguins.

Again, money isn’t an issue here, as it will be a league minimum contract, and since the Penguins have a few players on their roster on two-way contracts, adding Kampf could be a seamless transaction. Dubas is never shy about reuniting with “his guys,” so keep an eye on the Penguins as a contender to add the 30-year-old fourth-line defensive center.
