The Sunday afternoon game ended Bournemouth 0 Newcastle 0.
For each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives after the game.
On this occasion it is the armchair fan who gives his positives and negatives …
Newcastle and Bournemouth played a lukewarm 0-0 draw on Sunday.
Ninety minutes of Matte Voetbal hardly threw a talk points in an afternoon in which most Sky Sports viewers wanted them to have spent their time with a Sunday roasting piece, instead of coordinating this ninety minutes of sleeping pill.
Lucky Old Me was chosen to come up with three good and three bad points, so my thinking will continue in an attempt to remember something from the game.
Positive
A case for the defense
Four clean sheets in five league games for the tone show this season how difficult we are to break down.
We are solid at the back and therefore difficult to beat.
Eddie clearly approached the competition with the intention not to lose and in that respect he was successful in his objective. Put the ball occasionally in the net at the other end of the field and we can do business.
An away game
Three Way competitions have now seen a total of three points for the black and whites. Withdrawing home and winning at St James’ can be the formula for another crack at Champions League football. The seventy-six points that this would be rewarded with more than thirty-eight competition season would have been comfortable enough for a top-four finish in last year’s league table. This is still the case, even when invoicing in the recent defeat against home against Liverpool. Seven points of our next three games (two at home and one way) would see us on track to become a team that consistently plays against the very best in Europe.
Plow’s depth
Long past the days that the demands of Europe would see our team stretch than the breaking point.
Eddie Howe was able to make seven changes from our midweek confrontation with Barcelona and still go toe-toe away from home against one of the Premier League forms. Not only that, but we got away with a decent result and a point in the bag.
Negatives
Robbed?
Perhaps our best chance was to take the lead at the start of the second half, when Waltemade clearly pulled his shirt in the area.
Ludicous was not only missed/ignored by the referee, but also survived a VAR check, even though it was clear as a day. What is the point of VAR when even the most basic rules are completely overlooked? A fine for NUFC at that time could have changed the entire complexion of the competition and the traveling tone -army of four points for the boys, which made for a much nicer trip home.
Snooze Fest
I try to encourage my three-year-old son in the bittersweet universe of an obsessive NUFC fan.
I thought I was on a winner when ‘Peppa Pig’ was switched without a protest and he pointed to the screen with a smile and said ‘Newcastle!’.
Then he immediately lay down and fell asleep on the couch during the entire game. I think we can all agree that he had the right idea, to be honest, I wanted me to do the same as the game had turned out that it would have very little incident of remarkable Zzzzzzzzz.
Points decreased
Three Away has so far attracted this season that (perhaps even) could have seen victories for NUFC, means that we are already six points away from home. It is still too early to really take the competition table, but our current position of thirteenth place could be a much healthier second in the competition if we had converted those draws against villa, Leeds and Bournemouth into victories. Let’s start by collecting the points that will fire us to the top four, from next weekend against Arsenal.
