3 Maple Leafs trade targets to provide target depth amid injury concerns

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ starting goaltenders are struggling to stay healthy, and chances are general manager Brad Treliving is on the phone, tapping in around the league to see what help is available.

Anthony Stolarz and now Joseph Woll are both on injured reserve, and it’s difficult to determine exactly how long both goaltenders will be sidelined. Head coach Craig Berube said Woll could be out in a week, but as we’ve seen with this year’s Maple Leafs, you never know what timelines will unfold when it’s all said and done.
It’s been quite the start to the season for the Maple Leafs, and there are growing concerns about these common injury trends reoccurring for a second season for the Stolarz/Woll tandem. It’s time for Treliving to make some trade offers and bring in some veteran help while Dennis Hildeby holds down the fort.

Here are three potential trading targets for Treliving to consider:

Laurent Brossoit, Chicago Blackhawks

An easy target for the roster, there have been numerous reports that the Blackhawks are looking for a new home for Brossoit. Brossoit, 32, is in the final season of his contract, which pays him $3.3 million. Exactly the same amount as inconsistent Maple Leafs forward Matias Maccelli, for what it’s worth.

Brossoit is working on his injury and is on a rehab assignment with the Rockford IceHogs. At this point, he’s only played in one game and hasn’t looked great, but to be fair, he hasn’t played since the 2023-24 season, when he posted a 15-5-2 record with a 2.00 goals against average and a .927 save percentage as a member of the Winnipeg Jets.

If Brossoit joins the Maple Leafs, gives them a veteran to work with Dennis Hildeby, and he does everything they ask of him, once Stolarz and Woll return he will likely be cleared for waivers based on his contract alone. A short hop to the Toronto Marlies, Brossoit could continue to get some reps in the AHL and be ready if another injury occurs. And considering how bad Maccelli has been, this could be a way to not only secure some goaltending depth, but also give Maccelli a much-needed change of scenery after just a few months with the Maple Leafs.

Devin Cooley, Calgary Flames

Yes, any trade involving Calgary and Treliving will be complicated, but given how well Cooley is playing, the fact that he’s cheap and a pending free agent, the Maple Leafs should at least check in.

The 28-year-old Flames’ netminder has played in 11 games this season and posted a 3-3-2 record, along with a 2.17 GAA and .920 Sv.%. He only has 17 games of NHL experience under his belt, so Flames GM Craig Conroy won’t be able to ask for a ton in any trade.

With the Flames comfortably out of the playoff picture, it’s only a matter of time before Conroy starts selling off some assets, and depending on the severity of both Stolarz and Woll’s injuries, Treliving could have an intriguing option for depth in Cooley, who is owed just $775,000 this season.

Alex Nedeljkovic, San Jose Sharks

The Sharks have Yaroslav Askarov as their goaltender of the future, and they have history of making moves with the Maple Leafs, so could goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic be available?

The 29-year-old is 3-5-2 this year, posting a 3.19 GAA in 12 games, but has had quite a season with the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins team, posting a 3.12 GAA in 38 games. He will make $2.5 million AAV this season, has no trade protection and is a pending unrestricted free agent.

Nedeljkovic wouldn’t cost a dime to acquire, he has 191 games of NHL experience under his belt, and his best season came just two years ago when he went 18-7-7 for the Pens. He still has a lot of game left and could be a solid third string for the Maple Leafs, who are in a terrible spot with both top-two goaltenders out with injuries.

Ultimately, Treliving doesn’t have many options to consider in a very weak goalkeeper market, but he will have to consider making a move with the current injury status and history of both Stolarz and Woll.
