Playing golf in New York City can be difficult. From where I live in Brooklyn, it takes at least 45 minutes to go to a course – and that’s without traffic. It is sufficient to say that playing golf in NYC costs a serious dedication.
With the possibility to visit a driving range that is seriously limited by these time limitations, I notice that I do most of my practice in simulators. There is a five -iron not far from my apartment, and I usually go there a few times a week to beat balls. It is not exactly the same as turning grass in the sun, but it is better than nothing.
Practice in the simulator is a great way to get some representatives all week – especially in the winter – but it comes with some limitations. That is why, if I step on the course, I have to make some adjustments to translate that simulator into the course.
Below Golf Top 100 Teacher Joe Hallett explains three ways to practice in the simulator that will help you once you get back.
How you can translate your simulator practice outdoors
So you made the investment. You have the simulator, and you can even do it on some of the best jobs of golf on your magic machine. Life is good. You are even a +2 handicap in your own house – but on the actual course you play more as a 6 or 7. What gives you?
Here are a few tips to translate those indoor performance to outdoor success.
1. You wave free indoors – keep that feeling outside
In the simulator you let it tear. The ball only travels a few feet, so there is less fear of consequences. That freedom often leads to looser, more confident swuels. When you go to the course, try to bring the same dedication to your full swings. Don’t tighten.
2. Choose your irons and embrace variety
Your scoring irons are crucial. On the track you have confronted with unequal lies, wind and peat conditions – none of them experience you indoors. To prepare you, practice beating:
- Different routes: High, middle and low shots
- Shaped shots: fades and pulls
This helps to develop a better feeling and adaptability – two keys to clean, consistent contact outside.
3. Upgrade your short-game practice
Indoors is often of a perfect lie. That is no reality. Try this exercise: Press three types of chipshots to the same goal – a standard chip, a low runner and a high, soft landing shot. Note which clubs work best for each.
