3 Flyers considered untouchable in Quinn Hughes trade talks

The likelihood of Quinn Hughes leaving the Vancouver Canucks seems to increase with each loss, and his recent body language suggests his mind is already wandering toward that possibility. It’s hard to blame him given all the speculation and rumors about his next potential destination, which extends beyond just the obvious answer: the New Jersey Devils to play with his brothers Jack and Luke.

A Metropolitan Division rival of those Devils, the Philadelphia Flyers, has emerged as a suitor in recent weeks, thanks to Hughes’ connection to former head coach Rick Tocchet. The organization has sufficient resources to land a potential blockbuster deal.

However, it turns out that three of these assets are off limits, as team reporter Brandon J. Sommermann recently highlighted that Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster and Porter Martone will not be part of trade talks.

Sommermann wrote:

“I don’t know how many times this needs to be said, but let’s say it again… The Flyers will NOT be moving Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster or Porter Martone for Quinn Hughes. The trio is viewed internally as their building blocks for the future, 3/4 Top6 wingers,”

It is understood that the 26-year-old Hughes is in the fifth season of the six-year, $47.1 million extension he signed with the Canucks in 2021 and will be eligible for free agency after the 2026-2027 season.

You can’t get Quinn Hughes for pennies on the dollar

Philadelphia, like every other team in the NHL, will obviously have a lot of interest in acquiring Hughes, but if they really want to compete to land him, they will have to act.

This is the second best defender and one of the 10 best players in the world we are talking about; in a transaction, almost everything should be on the table.

Michkov is understandable, as he is who they hope will be the face of the franchise and a true superstar. However, if players like Foerster and Martone are also off-limits, the Flyers will have a hard time even getting close to a deal for Hughes.

If the reports are true, the Devils and Detroit Red Wings, among others, will be licking their chops knowing they have one less team to deal with in their pursuit of the 2023-24 Norris Trophy winner.
