Hundreds of thousands of customers of the second largest internet provider in Australia have affected their e-mail addresses or telephone numbers in a cyber attack.
A list of approximately 280,000 active e -mail addresses and approximately 20,000 active fixed telephone numbers were extracted from the Iinet order management system, said parent company TPG.
Another 10,000 inet user names, street addresses and telephone numbers and around 1,700 fashion settings passwords were also supposed to be accessible to an unknown third party.
The third party gained access to his system after stealing account details of an employee, early investigations suggest.
The hack was confirmed on Saturday, but TPG only informed Iinet customers or its shareholders on Tuesday morning.
“We apologize unconditionally to our Iinet customers who are affected by this incident,” TPG said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.
“We will immediately take steps to contact affected Iinet customers, advise on all the actions they have to take and offer our help.
“We will also contact all non-impact-iinet customers to confirm that they have not been affected.”
The system that is overtaken in the data breach is used to keep track of Iinet orders such as broadband connections.
No credit cards, bank details or customer -ID documents such as passports or driving licenses were exposed because that information was not stored in the system, the company said.
The Telco has removed the unauthorized access of its system and hired external IT and cyber security experts to help with the answer.
Also maintain contacts with the Australian Cyber Security Center, the National Office of Cyber Security, the office of the Australian information commissioner and other relevant authorities.
“We currently have no evidence to suggest an impact on our wider systems or other customers,” said TPG.
TPG Telecom Group has the second largest share of the internet market in Australia, with TPG, Vodafone, Iinet and Internode under the stable.
