Audrey Shin: “Working with Tessa Virtue was a dream come true”

Although the evening belonged to Efimova/Mitrofanov, it was also a standout performance for Shin/Nagy, who took on a new role. Moulin Rouge-theme short program mid-season.

The team has only been skating together for two years, but is now beating thanks in part to an Olympic gold medalist ice dancer Tessa Virtue.

The coaches of Shin/Nagy, Bruno Marcotte and Meagan Duhamelhad approached Virtue to come work with their team – and Virtue accepted.

“It was great to have her help with the intention and of course the choreography of the program,” Nagy said.

Shin added: “For me, working with Tessa was kind of a dream come true. I got to see her [PyeongChang 2018] Moulin Rouge program so often. [Having her] working with us was such an honor. And she gave us really good key points and character notes, which really helped us for this program.”

Kam/O’Shea was the last team to skate as the top-ranked American pair. Kam fell on their second major element, their side-by-side triple Salchows, and then struggled to stay upright during their triple throw on the other side of the rink.

“I’m definitely a little disappointed with the way I skated,” Kam said. “I thought we were very well prepared and we practiced very well all week. … We’re looking forward to having a very strong long program.”

“The nerves never go away, but it’s good to stay consistent,” O’Shea added. “But I think it’s a feature, not a bug. … We won’t make any drastic changes in the short term, we’ll keep the same process and just try to execute a little bit better.”
