2026 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in doubt due to travel issues in India

Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup in India is in serious doubt with less than three weeks left for the tournament to begin. The standoff centers on security and political concerns related to travel to India.

At a recent ICC board meeting, the Bangladesh Cricket Board asked for its matches to be moved out of India. The request was rejected, with only Pakistan supporting Bangladesh. The ICC said independent security reports found no real threat in India.

BCB President Aminul Islam has now asked the ICC for more time to speak to the Bangladesh government. The ICC has given Bangladesh a final period of 24 to 48 hours to confirm whether the team will travel.

The BCB had suggested several alternatives to avoid playing in India. These include shifting matches to Sri Lanka or switching groups with Ireland or Zimbabwe. All options were rejected due to tight schedules and objections from other boards.

Sri Lanka Cricket was one of the opponents of organizing matches in Bangladesh. The ICC also said that last-minute changes to the venue would damage the neutrality of the tournament and set a bad example for future events.

Tensions further increased after the Board of Control for Cricket in India ordered Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026. The BCB sees this as a worrying sign amid wider political issues.

The International Cricket Council has clarified that the IPL issue is not related to the security of the World Cup. It insists that the event in India will go ahead as planned.

Bangladesh will play three Group C matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. Their tournament opener is against West Indies on February 7.

The ICC has also warned of dire consequences if Bangladesh does not travel within the stipulated time. If they withdraw, they will be replaced, with Scotland the most likely option based on the rankings.

After the meeting, Aminul admitted that the situation is tense. “I hope for a miracle from the ICC. Who wouldn’t want to play the World Cup?” he said, adding that the board explained the reasons for doing so but chose not to put the issue to a vote.

With the clock ticking, Bangladesh faces a difficult task. The next 48 hours could decide whether they participate in the World Cup or miss out entirely.
