KC Current comes into the race for the championship as the undeniable favorite, completely dominating the competition this season and winning the shield with weeks to spare. A staggering 21-point lead separated them from second place, which turned out to be ahead of the rest.
Washington Spirit was their closest competitor, finishing in second place for the second year in a row. They are looking for what would be their second championship title this month, their first return in 2021. Pending successful injury rehabilitation, the Spirit could be boosted in their hopes with the return of the star striker Trinity Rodmanalthough that may depend on how far the team goes without her.
Orlando Pride – the reigning champions – are in the final eight, along with the Portland Thorns and NJ/NY Gotham, who have all won the accolade before.
Seattle Reign, San Diego Wave and Racing Louisville, meanwhile, are all in the hunt for their first. For the latter anyway, it marks history, reaching this stage of the NWSL for the first time in their short history.
