The seventh generation BMW M5, Codenaam G90, is by far the most controversial and given the history of the hot-up 5 series, which says something. It is the first with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which not only adds a considerable complexity, but also a large amount of mass.
Of course the power and performance figures provide some stunning lecture. The S68 4.4 liter Twin-Turbo V8, connected to an electric motor integrated in the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, makes an amount of 727 PS and no less than 1,000 Nm of torque.
With M xDrive four-wheel drive, this colossus throws itself to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds and, thanks to the M-controlled programs that is standard in Malaysia, reaches a top speed of 305 km/h. Paradoxically, it can also drive in fully electric mode for a maximum of 69 km on the WLTP cycle.
But the G90 now also weighs half a ton more than the outgoing F90, which tilts the scales on a barely credible 2,510 kg. To give you a sense of perspective, the M5 is now closer to the weight limit of 3,500 kg of a class D driving license than with the featherweight of the original E28 M5.
However, it is the experience behind the wheel that mainly matters, so despite everything that pushes against it, the new M5 – which now costs no less than RM1,188,800 – Do you still deliver the required sensation? Yours will really find out on the roads in Munich, as you can view in the video review above.
