The recent step of US President Donald Trump to impose an annual fee of $ 100,000 on H-1B-VISA has sent shock waves by the Indian IT industry. The announcement comes against the background of an already uncertain macro -economic climate, exacerbated by recent tariff increases.
USCIS data (USCIS) from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services show that Indian companies dominate the use of H-1B. Between FY09 and FY25, TCS were good for 98,259 Visa, Cognizant for 92,435, Infosys for 87.654 and Wipro for 77.289 – which they placed under the best beneficiaries of the program. The proposal can also have consequences in the following 10 areas:
1. Increased costs for hiring foreign talent
A few weeks ago, the Trump administration unveiled the Hire Act to encourage American jobs by taxing companies that prefer foreign workers to American employees. In combination with the $ 100,000 H-1B reimbursement proposal, this sponsoring H-1B employees mainly makes viable for senior or highly specialized roles. Companies could see profitability because hiring in the US is considerably more expensive than in countries such as India.
2. Press Indian IT services
USCIS data show that even in FY25, TCS, Infosys and Wipro continue to dominate among IT companies with the largest H-1B use. TCS led with 5,505 Visa, followed by Cognizant at 2,493, Infosys on 2,004 and Wipro at 1,523. Although Indian gradually reduces its dependence on H-1B talent, the proposed compensation, combined with an uncertain economic environment, profitability and rapid cost-saving measures or shifts in business models, could hollow out.
3. Global technical giants affected
American companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Apple will also be confronted with considerable increases in operating costs as a result of H-1B sponsorship. In FY25, Amazon led with 10,044 applications, followed by Microsoft on 5.189, Meta on 5.123, Apple on 4,202 and Google on 4,181.
4. Ripples over other sectors
In addition, sectors such as e-commerce, banking and financial services (BFSI), Automotive and Healthcare will also feel the impact because they are among the top 100 beneficiaries of the H-1B program.
5. Uncertainty for H-4 persons charged
The H-4 visa is issued to persons charged and unmarried children of certain non-immigrants, so that they can live in the US for the duration of the authorized stay of the primary visa holder. H-4 visa holders can also follow studies and in some cases request work authorization. However, the proposed H-1B reimbursement increase can also indirectly influence them.
6. Press international students
With the F-1 visa, individuals can enter the US as full-time students. To obtain an H-1B visa, F-1 holders must protect a job offer from an American employer who is willing to sponsor them. Employers then register candidates for the annual H-1B lottery, and if selected, a petition submits. With the proposed H-1B reimbursement increase, F-1 students can get fewer sponsorship options, which limits the career perspectives after graduating in the US.
7. Beurs market reaction
Stocks of both Indian IT and global companies can face the heat as investors anticipate margin and weaker American growth prospects.
8. Offshoring and acceleration at a distance
However, everything is not lost for the talent market of India. Companies can increasingly move the roles offshore or remotely assume to circumvent high visa costs, creating opportunities for India, which appears like a global hub for outsourced activities, including from GCC countries.
9. Worldwide again of talent
Skilled professionals or rising talent can increasingly look at other regions such as Canada, the UK, Germany or Golf countries, where immigration paths are less expensive.
10. Limitation of H-1B talent can touch the American technical leadership
Historically, many leaders of global technical giants, including Google, Microsoft, Adobe and IBM, held H-1B-VISA and limitations on foreign talent can influence the country’s competitiveness.
