If a 52-shot rally is an indication of how Alexander Zverev feels in his first outing, because a shocking first round of Wimbledon, the German seems to be charged for the North American hard swing.

Shapovalov served on 5-4 for the second set, but ten avoided a decision-maker by claiming three consecutive games. The 19-year-old, third in the PIF ATP Live Race to Jeddah, is for the first time in the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 event.

Eighth Seed Casper Ruud, competing in just his second tournament since Roland Garros, ran past Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-3. The Norwegian Next is opposed to Nuno Borges, who collected Facundo Bagnis 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-2 beyond the Argentinian qualifying match.

American Reilly Opelka, a finalist from 2021 in Toronto, surpassed the 16th seed Tomas Machac 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-3 after crushing 24 aces. 14th Seed Francisco Cerundolo escaped Jaume Munar 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 in a battle of two hours, 58 minutes, while Cerundolo’s countryman Tomas Martin Etcheverry 24th Griespoor 6-4, 7-6 (4) disrupted.
