Sri Lanka sealed a 2-0 Series Whitewash on Zimbabwe with a clinical victory of five wicket in the second ODI in Harare Sports Club on Sunday, thanks to a solid ton of Pathum Nissanka And a captain of Charith Asalanka. The game passed to the last, but again the visitors kept their courage to surpass the home team.
After beating Zimbabwe in a narrow seven-run victory in the first ODI, Sri Lanka came into confidence in the last game of the series. The competition started with Sri Lanka who chose the field.
Zimbabwe was put in the battle and started strong and scored 55 in the first 10 overs. Ben Curran anchored the innings with a 79 out of 95 balls, together with Brian Bennett’s 21 and Brendan Taylor’s 20. In the meantime, Dushmantha Chameera was the choice of the Bowlers, who chose three Wickets, including Bennett’s important scalp. Asitha Fernando’s double strike in the 32nd, where Curran and skipper Sean Williams quickly dismiss, brought Sri Lanka into a strong position.
Veteran Allrounder Sikandar Raza again came to the help of his team with an undefeated 59 of 55 deliveries. Together with Clive Madande (36 out of 36) he added 76 runs for the sixth Wicket and led Zimbabwe to a respectable total. Their late finish of 83 runs in the last 10 overs pushed the home team to 277/7 in 50 overs.
The chase of Sri Lanka was mainly built by the century of Nissanka. The opener anchored the innings and scored 122 of 136 balls with 16 borders. Despite losing partners at regular intervals, Nuwanidu Fernando (14), Kusal Mendis (5) and Sadeeera Samarawickrama (31), Nissanka took on important partnerships.
His stand with skipper Asalanka, who insisted 71 from 61 balls, played a major role in the team’s victory when they added 90 points for the fourth Wicket. Nissanka eventually fell with 42 points, but Asalanka took it until the end before he leaves with only six runs required. Janith Liyanage (19*) and Kamindu Mendis (5*) then took the team over the line when Sri Lanka 278 reached 5 in 49.3 overs, making the victory over with three balls.
