Trade union quality employees on Zenimax Media today announced that they had reached a provisional contract agreement with Microsoft, the parent company of Zenimax. The employees, represented by the Communication Workers of America, have negotiated for two years about this contract, which they say that it “determines new standards for the industry”, including new wage agreements and policy for AI tools.
According to the Union, the new agreement includes new minimum wage, wage increases across the board, random dismissal protection, complaints procedures and a new credit policy that ensures that QA employees are included in the credits of a game. The agreement also contains previously agreed rules on the use of AI in the workplace.
The CWA has previously reported that the long negotiations had not continued due to disagreements about work practices. The trade union members even voted to authorize a strike in April, and noticed that they had not been able to come up with Microsoft about a lack of remote work options and the replacement of internal employees with outsourced contract work.
CWA President Claude Cummings said in a statement: “Employees in the video game industry again demonstrate that collective power works. This agreement shows what is possible when employees stand together and refuse to accept the status quo. Or it is to say about the use of AI in the workplace. We have all the steps in the way to support.
