England and India were flooded in a time -waste row at Lord’s, with the antics of Zak Crawley who attracted a furious response from the visitor of Captain Shubman Gill.
The tourists had enough time to bow two awkward overs at the end of day three after they had been thrown out 387 on the same innings of England.
But Crawley ensured that there would only be six deliveries of Jasprit Bumrah, eat valuable seconds by retreating his posture on three separate occasions and then calling the physio after a ball that seemed to make light contact with his glove with his glove.
Tempers blazing because it became clear that India would not get another one, where Sky Sports had an on-Air apology after Gill was rejected “a few f ****** balls to grow” and coarse gestures.
Crawley and Gill pricked fingers to each other while they exchanged angry words before the end, with the other opener of England, Ben Duckett, also participated from the end of the non-triker.
The official X account of England made light of the tension by placing images of the final in addition to the words: “Always annoying if you can’t get anymore for close by”.
Tim Southee, the bowling advisor of England, seemed to accuse the gill double standards after he had delayed the end of the innings of the home team to get treatment on day two, while India all-rounder Washington Sundar also took time-out while beating an apparent comfort break.
“I’m not sure what they complained about when Gill got a massage yesterday in the middle of the day,” said Southe.
“It is clearly part of the game. It is always exciting to see both parties animated by the end and it was an exciting way to end the day. It was good to see energy from both sides.”
He also offered a poker face reaction when he was asked about Crawley’s call for treatment.
“He will be assessed at night. Hopefully it will be good to continue tomorrow,” was his deadpan reaction.
Kl Rahul appeared on behalf of the India team after scoring his sixth test and did not seem surprised by the behavior of Crawley.
“Two overs is a no-brainer with six minutes to go. But it was a bit of theatrics at the end,” he said.
“I know exactly what was going on; everyone knows exactly what was going on. But an opening seizure will fully understand what happened in the last five minutes.
“We all have been pumped up in both ways because we know how difficult it is to have a batter battered for two overs if you have been in the field all day. Even without I think we would have been fired.”
Former captain of England, Michael Vaughan, enjoyed the spectacle and told BBC’s Testmatch Special: “It is just as well a bit of time waste as I have ever seen.
“India can’t complain, because yesterday Gill was down with the hamstring tribe. Rahul was off the field and would not have opened the batting. But what a great drama and what a great day.”
Another former skipper, Sir Alastair Cook, said: “It is not the best look for cricket, but we will all remember that. Everyone was absolutely under the spell and I think the series needed it.
“There are small problems, you keep poking each other, and in the end something breaks the back of the camel. It makes it so good to look.”
