Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards made waves earlier this week when Shams Charania reported that Edwards is aimed at developing a post-up game. Zach Lowe, however, noted that this is not a new growth area for Edwards.
“In the fall of 2022, three years ago, Anthony Edwards was in my most intriguing players column at ESPN, said Lowe. And he and I talked on the phone about developing a post-up game and how he was in the lab that summer.”
Edwards shot 48 percent on post-ups that season. However, he only shot 25 post-ups per nba.com. Ant succeeded this with a career height of 53.1 percent at 49 post-ups in the 2023-24 season. Anyway, the post-up and the volume of Edwards fell last season. He shot a total of 26 post-ups and only struck 30.8 percent of them.
For Edwards to make his post-up improvement stick, he must consistently use this recording. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander showed the effectiveness of placing a guard and last season hit 53.5 percent of his 71 posts. Adding more of a mid-range and post-up game can help Edwards reach a different level as a scorer.
Developing a post-up game would benefit Edwards, but will it really happen?
A large part of the deterioration of Edwards like a post-up and medium-sized scorer has been his rise to become an elite shooter. Last season, Edwards made 320 3-Pointers and attempted 811 3S, both of which led the NBA. Edwards became an Elite shooter in all respects to benefit the wolves. However, to be a better rounded and less predictable scorer, sacrificing a few 3S may be needed for some mid-range shots.
Since this is a focus out of season for Edwards, it is fair to expect a slight decrease in the 3-point volume with a more stable center range and post-up diet. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old star will have to devote itself to the medium range more consistently, which he did not do in 2022.
At 6-foot-4, 225 pounds with top athletics, Edwards is more than equipped to become an efficient post-up player. The use of his physical gifts can open more opportunities for Edwards and both Scorer and playmaker.
Edwards on average a career height of 27.6 points per match last year, and this number may not increase considerably. However, being a more effective post-up and medium-sized scorer would make it more difficult to combat against game plan, especially in play-off settings.
It is still to be seen whether these improvements will come out for Edwards this time as a post-up threat, but it is something that Wolves fans are monitoring this season.
