Zach Edey will continue his rehabilitation from a stress reaction in his left ankle and will be reevaluated in approximately six weeks, the Memphis Grizzlies announced. The decision follows expert recommendations after the injury was first diagnosed on December 11.
Edey will stick to his current plan of discharge and rehabilitation. The 7-foot center played in 11 games for the Grizzlies this season after missing the start of the season due to offseason ankle surgery.
Edey made his season debut on November 15 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 11 games, he averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.1 assists in 25.8 minutes per game.
His shooting improved significantly from his rookie year, with his field goal percentage increasing to 63.3% and his free throw percentage increasing to 78.1%. The former Purdue star established himself as a key piece in Memphis’ frontcourt before the injury.
The Grizzlies are already facing significant roster challenges and are ranked 10th in the Western Conference with a 17-22 record. The team has lost six of its last eight games and faces additional uncertainty with trade rumors surrounding star point guard Ja Morant.
Edey’s absence creates a void in Memphis’ interior defense and recovery. The timetable for his return remains uncertain pending the results of his re-evaluation in six weeks.
