With all platforms that are now trying to determine better resources to detect users of users, to protect young people against potentially harmful in-app exposure, Youtube tests his own new approach to age detectionWith the help of a series of in-app signals to determine the age of the users.
YouTube launches an extensive pilot test of a machine learning -based age detection system, which will use measures as The types of videos that a user is looking, the categories of videos they have viewed, and the age of the account, to detect younger users.
That is probably a poor system, but YouTube seems to be convinced that it will help determine the age of the viewer.
According to YouTube:
“In the coming weeks we will start rolling out machine learning to a small set of users in the US to estimate their age, so that teenagers and adults are treated as adults. We will follow this closely before we roll it out wider.”
YouTube says that the approach that measures the aforementioned factors will enable it to distract the age of a user and then use that signal, “regardless of the birthday in the account.”
“We have been using this approach in other markets for quite some time, where it works well. We are now bringing it to the US and if we make progress, we will roll it out in other markets. We will follow the user experience closely and collaborate with makers to ensure that the entire ecosystem benefits from this update.“
Don’t know. Unless there are additional factors that does not share YouTube, it makes an assumption based on basic account information and the videos that a person watches, certainly cannot be an accurate indicator for the age of a users.
But again, when you work on the scale of YouTube, with billions of users, there are probably clear correlating factors that are an indication of younger user trends. And perhaps, mapped out on all interactions and commitments in the app, there are definitive patterns that can detect these users, even if they have stated their age on their profile differently.
And again, YouTube says it already works in some markets, so maybe this will turn out to be an effective approach to age detection.
Youtube says When the system identifies a teenage user, they are automatically switched to his age -passed experiences and protection. Users who are wrongly tagged through this process can verify that they are 18 or older with a credit card or a government ID.
“We will only allow users who are derived or verified as more than 18 to view age -restricted content that can be inappropriate for younger users.“
It is another example of the variable approaches that platforms take to determine the age of the users, which have lately become a greater focus due to new laws and approaches in some regions. For example, in the UK, for example, it has recently been determined Online Safety Act imposes fines on platforms that do not implement age detection measures.
Various other regions investigate similar limitations and penalties, which have encouraged each platform to come up with its own way to determine the user age, to meet such approaches.
But with every platform that uses a different approach, enforcement will be difficult. And really, the only workable solution for this front is to impose a uniform, broad framework for detection and enforcement, which contains all apps according to the same standard.
Or let the app shops do it. An App Store detection process at the level of the level would reduce a centralized approach to such and reduce the variability of these measures within each app.
Apple and Google would like to avoid this, but as I have noticed before, without a doubt uniform, definitive measures on the determination of the user age, there are far too many meshes that can be exploited, and the enforcement of this will remain a challenge.
