2 minutes, 51 seconds Read

With the countdown to Christmas underway, Australians are navigating a patchwork of trading hours to get their groceries, gifts and essentials.
Major supermarkets, chain stores, off-licences and hardware stores have all adjusted their opening hours, with closures on Christmas Day and varying opening hours on surrounding holidays.
State-specific restrictions mean that what is open in one city may be closed down the street.
For shoppers who leave things to the last minute, knowing what’s open – and when – can make all the difference.

Below you will find a detailed guide to the main categories of stores.

supermarkets

Coles will maintain normal opening hours in all states until Christmas Eve. Shops are closed on Christmas Day and reopen on Boxing Day (except metropolitan shops in Adelaide, which remain closed).
Woolworths maintains extended trading hours in the run-up to Christmas. In most states, shops are closed on Christmas Day and open on Boxing Day, although some shops in South Australia and Northern Territory remain closed.

Aldi trading hours vary by store and state. All stores are closed on Christmas Day, and some South Australian outlets are also closed on Boxing Day.

Only a few local shops and petrol stations will be open for essential purchases on Christmas Day.

Liquor stores

Dan Murphy’s, BWS and Liquorland will be open on Christmas Eve.

Almost all shops are closed on Christmas Day, with a few exceptions in Victoria and Tasmania. All shops will open again on Boxing Day.

Retail

Kmart, Target and Big W are all closed on Christmas Day. Trading will resume on Boxing Day, but hours may vary by location. Shoppers are advised to check individual store websites for local opening hours.

Westfield Malls are closed on Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, most centers are open from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The centers will reopen on Boxing Day, with some trading until 9pm.

Office work’ closing times on Christmas Eve depend on location. Shops will reopen on Boxing Day, but may operate with shorter opening hours.

Hardware stores

Bunnings warehouse stores are open on Christmas Eve, with hours varying by location. All shops are closed on Christmas Day. From Boxing Day to January 2, opening hours vary by store, and Bunnings Trade Centers and Frame and Truss facilities are closed from December 25 to January 5.

State-specific holidays also affect trading hours, including Christmas Eve evenings in Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Checking store locators or retailer websites is the best way to check local opening hours and plan your festive shopping efficiently.

Banks

All major bank branches are closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Customers are advised to check their local bank branch for reopening times.

Banks generally do not process payments on public holidays on the same day, meaning transactions may not be processed until the next business day. However, instant payment services such as PayID and Osko are expected to operate normally over the holiday period, including on Christmas Day.

Medical centers

On Christmas Day, out-of-hours medical clinics and home visiting physician services will be open for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries.
In case of emergency, people are advised to call triple-zero or go to the nearest hospital.
It is expected that emergency dental services will also remain available nationally.
Some pharmacies will be open on Christmas Day for prescriptions and essential medical supplies, although opening hours vary and customers are encouraged to contact their local pharmacy in advance to confirm availability.
