Abhishek Sharma has struggled in the T20 World Cup despite entering the big event in good form. Citing the same example, the former middle-order batsman opined that the absence of Kohli and Rohit is evident in Team India. The duo bid adieu to the T20Is after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. Kaif believes that their experience could have been a valuable asset for someone like Abhishek.
“When Abhishek is not playing well, like now, you feel the absence of players like Virat and Rohit in the side. When Virat was playing, he would talk to the other batters, Rohit too. They have played a lot and seen a lot. It is always an advantage for juniors to have such players. The mental stage that Abhishek is in now, with someone like Virat and Rohit, would be beneficial for the youngsters. Abhishek would have been given a lot of guidance if they had been there,” he said on his YouTube channel.
The No. 1 ranked T20I batsman, Abhishek, has failed to score a run in the competition so far, registering three consecutive ducks. The former Under-19 World Cup captain recalled how Virat Kohli came back strong in the 2024 World Cup final despite a horrific performance in the group stages.
“Virat had a strike rate of 150 in the IPL and tried to play the same way in the 2024 World Cup but it didn’t work for him. The pitches were different. In the final he changed his game much late but he got back to his old self and appreciated his wicket. He also changed his game. So if a great batsman can do that, it’s time for Abhishek to refine himself too. You can’t play at your own pace because it’s not here for you succeeded,” he concluded.
The Indian team has been drawn into Group 1 in the Super 8 stage along with South Africa, Zimbabwe and West Indies. England, Sri LankaNew Zealand and Pakistan form Group 2.
