“You don’t associate with today’s T20 cricket”: Nathan Ellis, Shivam Dube’s blunt comments on Shubman Gill’s slow 46

India National Cricket Team T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill has been praised by his teammate Shivam Dube and Australia National Cricket Team pacer Nathan Ellis for his slow knock.

Shubman Gill played quite a slow bat in the fourth T20I of the five-match series against the Australia National Cricket Team at the Gold Coast Stadium (Carrara), Gold Coast on Thursday, November 6.

Shubman Gill played an innings you wouldn’t associate with today’s T20 cricket: Nathan Ellis

Since his return to the T20I setup, Shubman Gill has not been able to fire with the bat. He has been given a permanent place in the top flight, but he is yet to make an impactful knock that will justify his selection over the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson.

In the fourth T20I against the Aussies, Gill played a cautious flick and tried to extend his stay in the middle before being castrated by Nathan Ellis in the 15th over.

He scored 46 runs off 39 balls, with 4 fours and 1 six, batting at a strike rate of 117.94. Shubman Gill was heavily criticized for his slow batting but Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav praised him and stated that he played according to the conditions.

Now, Gill has received praise from both the opposition team and Nathan Ellis, who stated that the Indian vice-captain’s knock cannot be associated with modern T20 cricket, but it was very important. He said:

“Shubman Gill played an innings that you wouldn’t associate with today’s T20 cricket, but that was important for them to go deep into the match, which was to their credit.”

The collaboration with Shubman was important – Shivam Dube

All-rounder Shivam Dube further praised Gill for not being tempted to cross boundaries and focusing on taking singles and doubles. He said:

“The collaboration with Shubman was important. They enticed us to explore the longer frontiers,” said the all-rounder from India.

“We decided to partner up, take singles and twos and whatever deliveries were going to be affected, we would focus on them. It was critical for us to stay there.”

167 in this field is definitely a good score – Shivam Dube

Dube further stated that India was confident of defending the score after posting 167/8 on the board as they had planned things very well.

“167 at this ground is definitely a good score because the quality of bowling we have, the spinners, the fast bowlers… I trust them and the whole team trusts our bowlers,” Dube said.

“Sure, it’s a T20 match and all the batters can come and bat, but on this ground where the side boundaries are big, we planned it very well and were confident that we could stop them,” Dube added.

Notably, India recorded a comfortable 48-run win in the match and would head to Brisbane for the series finale where they would look to complete another series win under Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav.
