Interesting to read these comments from BBC Sport, following Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.
The comments from neutral people in particular tell…
It was very different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from BBC Sport’s ‘neutrals’.
BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past have largely been a catalog of abuse directed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the owners of Newcastle United and the media-inspired fuss that NUFC fans have become accustomed to when they are blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion, politics were completely absent and instead focused on matters on the pitch and Newcastle United won the Champions League… again.
Special attention to the opening goal!
The BBC Sport readers comments of neutral players, a few Athletic Bilbao fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter, who also contributed:
‘I’m not a Newcastle fan but just watched the highlights out of interest. That Dan Burn header is unfathomably good.
Seriously, who can CURL a headline?! The initial trajectory was much wide and somehow he turned that with his forehead just inside the post.
It gets better and more confusing every time you watch it. Superb goal. I cannot think of a more technically excellent goal. Ever.’
‘Well done Geordies, from a Tic man, look how Bruges is being ripped off by decisions wrongly made against them! But what a game, hopefully you don’t have to play either of them’
‘I’ve never seen a header curl so much. I was sure it went wide. Bend it like Burn!’
Joint fifth place in the Champions League. Well done Newcastle, a win is a win.’
‘I prefer sixth, above Liverpool.’
‘Ironically, a lead on goal difference.
You’d think Liverpool had all the firepower they needed… oh, wait…’
“I’m looking forward to seeing them plummet in the coming weeks.”
‘It seems a bit harsh for Liverpool, we’ve already beaten them by one trophy this year…’
‘Just out of interest…’
Would anyone please publicly revise their pre-season predictions on where Newcastle would finish in the Champions League?’
‘Dan Burn is now ahead of Isak in the all-time Champion’s League goalscoring list.’
“Now that’s two Dan Burn headers I’ll never get tired of.”
“He muted it
Simple
In my next life I want to come back as Big Dan Burn’s dog.”
“Lewis Hall looked huge when he came on. No fear, pure determination and faith. Got himself (and the team) out of a number of dangerous situations and turned from negative to positive with good feet, close control, drive, strength and vision, and an impressive comeback.’
“I thought he had a bit of Sandro and Bruno in him in tight situations tonight. Great mentors for that position.
I’ve been looking forward to Hall and Tino’s return. If they both shoot, we’ll be a joy to watch.”
‘Why did the highlights commentator say that Athletic are the only Spanish team we have ever beaten in Europe? Forgot Barca, Real Zaragoza, Mallorca, Celta Vigo. The BBC’s standards these days are absolutely shocking. Five minutes of research would be advisable before making idiotic and incorrect statements’
‘Not a fan of Newcastle, but Burn deserves his place in the England team on merit. He is not as skilled as the other players but his heading ability is superb as was proven last night and in the cup final against Liverpool his physical presence alone will throw fear, anxiety and confusion into the opposition defence…’
‘I wouldn’t get tired of watching that Burn goal and I suspect he’ll feel the same… a stunner
He should be a fixture in his man cave for years to come.”
‘The statue of Eddie Howe is back!’
‘I’m struggling to think of a better header (that I’ve seen). The thing is, you can actually see his head moving to aim the ball. I don’t remember ever seeing that before. Could be wrong, but hey, kudos to Burn.”
‘A banana head. I’ve seen everything now.’
‘Banana man.’
‘Heading title of the season. Possible headline of the century!’
‘Fair play to Newcastle for making a tough match look like a routine win.’
‘Not to deny Burn, he has been an absolute quality for you, Toon.
Must be involved in the World Cup.
Burn and Maguire could do some serious damage if Rice were to hit him in the box.”
‘Terribly sloppy play from the Magpies, but two good headers were enough.’
‘As an Athletic fan it’s very frustrating to start a match like this with nine players out… including Nico Williams and all our strikers.
Was satisfied with the first half, but a nice header from Burn and a bit of bad luck with two shots on the post.
The second goal was a killer and it never looked like we would be able to get the score back. Although the young boys did well when they came on.”
‘To play four CL matches and only concede two goals is staggering… the Toon continues… onwards and upwards.’
‘A devout Arsenal supporter would like to say: DAN BURNS, that drifting curling header already needs a special award as header of the season. Congratulations Daan. Sublime.’
“We (athletically) actually had nine players out… including both Williams brothers, Sancet and Guruzeta… Basically our entire offense.”
‘If Trippier’s precision cross didn’t already have the anti-clockwise spin you could see after Burn headed it, I’d eat my hat and ride a horse!! The whole thing – including Joelinton and Thiaw’s blocks – was a masterclass.’
‘Shout out to Newcastle’s new coach, Martin Mark, who has undoubtedly played a big role in that.
He’s already making his money.’
