After more than three and a half months on the injured list, Jordan Alvarez Seems to approach a return. Astros -Manager Joe Espada told The Houston Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara And other reporters that Alvarez is planned to start a rehabilitation assignment at Double-a Corpus Christi on Tuesday. GM Dana Brown gave a few more details during a Pregame Radio interview and said that the plan is that Alvarez will play on Thursday and Friday after a rest and exam day on Wednesday.
August 26 is the most likely day for the activation of Alvarez van de Il, when the Astros start a home series against the Rockies. Brown suggested that if Alvarez feels good after his first three Double-A matches, the Slugger could be activated on Saturday when the Astros are in Baltimore, but of course the team will be careful, given the recovery process of Alvarez is already filled with stops and starts.
Hand problems have harassed Alvarez in the past, so there was some fear that his first IL placement as a result of hand inflammation in the beginning of May can go much further than the minimum 10 days. While Alvarez was advanced to the end of the month Live Batting exercise, the situation took a turn when he felt a little more pain in his right hand, and a follow-up MRI revealed a slight break in his right ring finger. More pain in the beginning of July required a move to the 60-day IL, and Kawahara writes that Alvarez also received two injections to tackle the inflammation.
Alvarez was able to restart his battle progression and Espada said that the triple all-star came across live-pitching yesterday in the Spring Training Complex of Astros. This was enough for the club to finally have a good rehabilitation assignment in Greenlight.
2025 has been something of a lost year completely for Alvarez, because he was alone .210/.306/.340 struck his first 121 plate appearances before he went to the IL. Alvarez has a history of relatively slow start, so although these figures were far under his career .838 Ops in March and April, there was not much doubt that he would eventually be on the right track with his usual level of Elite Slugging. The Astros can only hope that Alvarez is able to return without needing much time to get in shape, because every game is crucial in the play -off race.
Given how Houston has been without Alvarez for most of the season and has tackled a wealth of other injuries to several important players, it is somewhat remarkable that the Astros are still 69-55 and in the first place in the Al West. However, a once zoom-in division lead has been taken to just one game, because the Mariners are rising and the Astros are only 14-20 in their last 34 games.
