World No. 4 won, the semi -final included an American and a Chinese team member lost in almost every round (Xue in R32, Shindong in R16, Peng in the Kwartalen and Chuqin in the final) – and those were just the surprises on the men’s side of the WTT Champions Series event event event. And to touch some of the Ladies’ headlines – World No. 1 made the final but did not win, World No. 2 lost in the second round, World No. 3 was the winner and an American reached the last 16.
The top fourth of the draw was good for most of the early headlines, because Kanak of the US Simon Gauzy and Kao defeated Cheng-Jui and Dang Qiu World No. 1 Lin Shidong overted. The headliners met in the quarters and Kanak Jha dominated Dang Qiu who launched him further than an American ever in a WTT Championship Series event. Tomokazu Harimoto ended Jha’s Run in the semi-final with a strong 4-1 victory, and then to keep the spotlights, it was Harimoto who won the tournament with a 4-2 win over World No. 2 Wang Chuqin.
On the women’s side, Lily Zhang Doo Hi Kem defeated in their round of 32 matchup. DOO is no. 39 in the world and Zhang is no. 38, so this was not upset – but the two had met 10 times before and the Korean had all won 10, so this was a solid personal victory for Lilly Zhang. Lily fell no. 9 Satsuki Odo in the round of 16, but helped the US to keep a few extra days in the news during this big tournament.
World No. 1 Sun Yingsha dominated the competition with 3-0, 3-1, 4-0 and 4-1 victories on the way to the final. But it was World No. 3 who emerged from the lower half of the draw and eventually win the last 4-2. Chen Xingtong broke the pattern by taking the latter two games – the semi -final and finals.
