St. Louis – In case there were concerns about how Paul Goldschmidt’s sprained knee would influence his battle, he answered them with every passing hit on Sunday afternoon.

Goldschmidt made his first start since he injured his right knee, Goldschmidt put a three-hit game together with a few Doubles to send the Yankees to an 8-4 victory over the cardinals in Busch Stadium.

“Of course to win the victory, for me to achieve a few hits, it was good,” said Goldschmidt. “I tried not to do that, but it was certainly a little bit in mind. But you’re just going to play. I knew there was no extra risk to play. So just play and try to play well.”

Goldschmidt had started on Friday as a defensive replacement at first base, which manager Aaron Boone later said that he was even a bit reluctant to do the Yankees initially feared that this was something that the 37-year-old would land on the wounded list.

But by Sunday he was acquitted to return to the line -up and felt his impact.

“I really didn’t worry about the knee,” he said. “But there is a strange subconscious when you hurt something or want to test your body a bit. I would hit well, I had done the defense, but to go there and play nine, it was good. I would not have told Booney and them if I thought I would endanger our team or even myself.”

Goldschmidt, the ex-cardinale who received a standing ovation for his first start in his first start back in Busch Stadium, doubled in the fourth inning to combine a three-run rally and later added a double in the ninth who ran into an insurance run.

“That’s classic Goldie there,” said Boone. “He flashed it today.”


After starting 46 consecutive games, Anthony Volpe received a breathing break on Sunday when José Caballero joined Shortstop.



Volpe eventually came in the match in the ninth inning as a pinchopper for Giancarlo Stanton, scored a point and then played short stop in the bottom of the frame.

Volpe, who usually responded well to the rare days off he received in his career, was stuck in a 7-out-47 (.149) about his last 13 games for Sunday.


Jonathan Loáisiga (Mid-Back Tightness) started a rehabilitation assignment on Sunday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, who threw 16 throws into a scoreless inning. … Fernando Cruz (sloping tribe) made his second rehabilitation -appearance in that match and stood up two points in a collection while he threw 20 throws. … Amed Rosario (SC Joint Straug) received pregame -defending work on Sunday and is expected to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday when he is eligible for the first time.


Director of Catching Tanner Swanson was ejected in the fourth inning by the third base referee Vic Carapazza.

Multiple Yankees barked over a third strike to Trent Grisham, and eventually Cardinals Warmer Miles Mikolas got off the hill and pointed as he walked to the Yankees Dugout, at what point Carapazza Swanson.
