Observations from the Yankees’ spring training on Thursday.
Having a blast
Jazz Chisholm Jr., Paul Goldschmidt and Spencer Jones all crushed home runs in a 7-3 win over the Braves – Chisholm’s first of the spring and the second for both Goldschmidt and Jones.
A downer for Doval
Camilo Doval made his spring debut and gave up a home run to ex-Yankees minor leaguer Ben Gamel in an inning of work. But he recovered by striking out three batters, leaving a runner on third base.
Caught my attention
Goldschmidt’s homer came off the bat at 100.4 mph, but his single in the bottom of the first inning (against former Yankee Carlos Carrasco) was smoked at 110 mph.
Results can be deceptive in the spring, especially for veterans, but quality of contact is a better measure and in that regard Goldschmidt has consistently hit the ball hard through the first week of play.

Friday’s schedule
Luis Gil will make his second start of the spring when the Yankees travel to face the Twins in Fort Myers, Florida.
