Manchester United’s hopes of a deal for Yan Diomande have increased following the RB Leipzig star’s latest move, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Wingers are back on the menu

The Red Devils are prioritizing a new left winger this summer, with the departure of Ruben Amorim marking a return to the flying wide men at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick, appointed as interim coach until the end of the season following Amorim, has made a switch to a 4-2-3-1 system – with the results speaking for themselves.

Three wins in a row against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham have changed the atmosphere at the club. It makes the prospect of Champions League qualification realistic, with United currently fourth in the table.

The form of Amad and Bryan Mbeumo – reinvented as a false nine under Carrick – means the right side is well stacked. However, the left lacks a natural option to feel at home.

Matheus Cunha’s best work takes center stage, while Patrick Dorgu’s long-term future is likely to be further away despite his impressive performance in January. Mason Mount also offers an alternative, although it is also more effective on the inside.

United launched an ambitious move to sign Antoine Semenyo over the Christmas period, with the Bournemouth talisman’s contract including a £65m release clause. But he rejected these advances in favor of a move to City, citing playing under Pep Guardiola as a key motivator.

However, the chase shows the profile INEOS is aiming for, with the 6’0 winger possessing a powerful combination of physical and technical qualities, able to play on either flank with excellent dribbling and lethal finishing. It therefore makes sense to opt for Diomande – a player with broadly similar skills to Semenyo – as the main alternative to the Ghanaian international.

Diomandes are not forever

Diomande has come to life in the Bundesliga and has firmly established itself as one of Europe’s hottest commodities.

Despite being only 19 years old, he has ranks is among the continent’s elite in terms of dribbling and ball progression, while in the opposition field he shows a clinical touch that belies his years. The Ivorian – who played alongside Amad at the Africa Cup of Nations – scored eight goals and provided six assists in 21 appearances, an average contribution per 102 minutes.

RB Leipzig are desperate to sign their prized asset after signing him from La Liga minnows Leganes €20m last summer. The German club has indicated that he will “definitely” be at the Red Bull Arena next season, with the firm intention of rejecting offers of up to “€80 or €90 million”.

However, this battle to keep Diomande where he is will require willingness on his part – and Romano reveals that the youngster has signed with a new agency just ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Tweet: “RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomandé has today signed with Roc Nation Sports International as a new agency. Important decision ahead of the summer transfer window, which several top clubs are excited about.”

Founded by Jay Z, Roc Nation Sports is a high-profile group designed to “elevate athletes’ careers on and off the court.” If a player appoints them as their representative, it is a clear signal of a drive for change, both competitively and commercially – probably both in the case of a highly sought-after youngster.

Final thoughts – United are leading the race

Romano claims “several top clubs [are] excited about Diomande, with United being joined in England by Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also in the hunt further afield.

However, these clubs – outside of Tottenham, who pose no threat – do not have the same need for the left wing as United does. It would be a difficult decision for them to sanction a raid worth as much as 100 million euros for a striker with less than 18 months of experience in senior football.

This risk is exactly what gives United the inside track to make a deal for a player who has the potential to develop into one of Europe’s most devastating wingers. It’s a case of wait and see for INEOS – with Diomande’s agent change showing which hand he wants to lay down this summer.
