UConn has announced the addition of Alex Westlund to the Hockey Coaching Staff of the men as an assistant coach with a focus on goal congregation and recruitment.
Westlund joins the Huskies employees after having spent the past three years with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL, where he served as the team’s goal convenation coach.
“We are pleased to add Alex to our program,” said Huskies head coach Mike Cavanaugh in a statement. “He is an experienced coach who brings valuable knowledge of the NHL, AHL and Team USA. His enthusiasm for the game will be contagious and we look forward to having him in our team.”
Prior to his time at the Red Wings, Westlund served as a goalkeeper coach for Team USA during the IIHF World Championship (2024) and was the Hershey Bears (AHL) of the AHL’s Goaltening Coach (2017-22). In addition, Westlund served as a goalkeeper coach abroad for the KHL’s Medvescak Zagreb (2016-17) and the Augsburg Panther Eishockey Club (2015-17).
Bovenop zijn ervaring op professioneel niveau, is Westlund zeer bekend met het hockeysysteem van de VS en dient als de USA Hockey New England District Head Goalie Coach en evaluator voor de U15-U18 Age-groepen en maakte deel uit van de USA Hockey Select 17 Festival Goalie Evaluation Group voor de Hlinka Gretzky Cup Summer Tourname in 2015 and 2021.
Westlund, graduated from Yale, established the record for all time played games played and saved and won the Ivy League championship in 1998 and 1999.
Westlund appeared in more than 750 professional games for 16 seasons and played in competitions in North America, Russia, Europe and Asia.
