X launches a standalone chat app for accessing DMs

For anyone who uses X primarily as a platform for chat, the social media site’s latest move will be interesting. A new chat-only site is now available, so you can handle messages without having to worry about the rest of the platform.

By separating chat and messaging from the main site, X competes more directly with the likes of WhatsApp. Currently, the site is designed with desktop users in mind, but it is believed that X is working on a mobile version as well.

The chat site – or web app, if you prefer – is nothing special. It’s basically just the direct messaging component of X ripped out of the main site and turned into a standalone product.

As such, the options for X Chat are a bit limited, but there are nice controls to place restrictions on who can message you. There is the option to not allow anyone to message you, but you can either open this up to verified users only, or go all in with the ‘Everyone’ option.

Additionally, there is the option to allow your subscribers to send you messages, and the setting you choose here can override the message request settings in general. Now

The only other choice you have is to select the color to use to highlight different elements of the app, such as the URL highlight color and the color of selections.

You have access to X-chat here – the first time you visit the site, you’ll be asked to set a passcode (for encryption’s sake), and you’ll then be ready to start messaging.

If you’ve tried out the new site, share your thoughts in the comments below. What works and what can be improved?
