On Wednesday, Alcaraz turned the entire tennis world upside down when he announced that he and Ferrero were done as a team. They worked for seven years and achieved enormous success.
Not only did Alcaraz become one of the best players in the world under Ferrero’s guidance, but he is also coming off a season in which he won two Grand Slams and finished as No. 1 at the end of the year. That makes his coaching move even more baffling.
Saville: I have a feeling that Alcaraz and Ferrero will get back together
“I was actually very sad, they are an iconic duo and every break with a coach feels like a break. That’s the other thing, we don’t know how well Carlitos is going to play at this year’s AO because there is a bit of a mourning moment. I also have a feeling that they will get back together. Juan Carlos did say: ‘Maybe one day we will cross paths again.’ I feel like he’s going to be kind of in his corner all the time,” former world number 20 Saville said on The Tennis podcast.
After predicting a reunion of Alcaraz and Ferrero, Saville also said she did not expect the six-time Grand Slam champion to find a new coach straight away.
“I actually don’t think he will hire anyone anytime soon because he has an established team,” Saville added.
Saville then explained her claim by saying that players usually fire coaches when they don’t get the results they want or when a coach can’t commit to traveling with a player. She noted that Alcaraz certainly didn’t drop the 2003 French Open champion for those reasons.
“But I don’t think that’s the case because he said, ‘I wish I could have continued.’ And then contract, money, agreement. But because of that I have never had a divorce with a coach,” Saville concludes.
