Sri Lanka -Schipper Chamari Athapaththu Is optimistic about the opportunities of her team at the upcoming ICC World Cricket World Cup for ICC, and notes that subcontinental conditions will offer a boost for its part. Sri Lanka will return to the 50-over World Cup after missing the previous edition in New Zealand in 2022. Athapaththu believes that familiarity with local circumstances can be an important advantage, because the tournament starts on September 30.
The captain also trusted the historic Run of Sri Lanka on the World Cup 2013, the last time the event was performed in the subcontinent, where they reached their best finish of fifth place. With a mix of experienced players and promising young talent, Athapaththu is hopeful that her team can reach the opportunity again.
“Playing on a World Cup is not something that you can do every day, and it is an opportunity that we will not take for granted. It is a huge honor for Captain My Land on an ODI World Cup and the fact that part of the tournament is played at home in Sri Lanka makes it much more special.
“Sri Lankan cricket has taken a long way since the 1990s and we have since participated in different world cups. In my own time I can say that we have grown as much as a team over the years. In 2013 we have beaten the champions and that of the world in 2013.
Sri Lanka will treat every team with equal respect
The Sri Lanka campaign starts on 30 September with the opening match against Co-host India in Guwahati. Following that fixture, the side will play five of their remaining six games in Colombo, where large crowds are expected. The leader is hopeful that strong home support will lift the players and add Momentum to their versions. She admitted that there is also trust in the camp with regard to the balance of the team.
“We have a promising group of players such as Harshitha Samarawicrama, Vishmi Gunaratne and Kavisha Dilhari, together with various other talented young people. The subcontinent conditions are something that we are used to, and I think we will give a secret benefit.
“This tournament is also an opportunity for us to increase our standards at a new level. All teams in this World Cup are here to win, so we will not underestimate anyone. We will treat every opponent with the same respect and give our best in every match, starting with the opener against India in Guwahati on 30 September. More will look at home for television screens at home.
