A woman in the southeast of South Australia has suspended a five-month prison sentence after he admitted that he fed six dogs under her care.

Melissa Jane Dowdy has been convicted in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court for six counts of poor treatment of an animal, one counting of driving while disqualified and other row -violations.

The court heard that in August 2023 an RSPCA inspector visited Mount Gambier of the 38-year-old after a report from a member of the community.

The inspector discovered that two of the six dogs in the house were emaciated and offered Dowdy dog ​​food.

Dowdy was also told to take the dogs to a vet, what she did, but did not attend weekly follow -up appointments.

The court heard that an RSPCA inspector returned to the property in October and seized the two dogs, Yogi and Cerberus.

Both dogs were extremely emaciated and Dowdy said they were not of her, but had been left under her care.

One of the four remaining dogs that were Dowdy’s was underweight, while the others were in a reasonable state, the court heard.

But when the RSPCA attended the address again two months later, the dogs appeared to have suffered considerable weight loss and there was no food for them in the house.

The court heard that Dowdy Inspectors said that she could not afford dog food at the time.

The dogs, Gohan, Buddy, Coco and Panda, were seized and a veterinary assessment showed that they had also been starving.

Dogs have returned to health

All six dogs have a considerable weight in RSPCA care and no underlying health problems have been found that may have caused them to be underweight, the court heard.

The RSPCA said that the dogs were rehabilitated and achieved again, although one was euthanaled due to unmanageable behavioral problems.

The court heard the total costs for the RSPCA for veterinary care and the entry of the dogs was more than $ 36,000.

Dowdy’s legal representative Michael Hill told the court that his client’s actions were the result of a bad judgment due to unresolved trauma and self -medication with drugs.

“Pets for her have been a source of stability and dependence and compassion and she suffers a lot from what happened,” Mr. Hill told the court.

“She is extremely unfortunate.“

The court heard that Dowdy was deported from her house when her four dogs were seized, but had found stable accommodation since then.

Suspicion

During the conviction yesterday, magistrate Koula Kossiavelos said that despite the fact that Dowdy was responsible for the care of the animals despite her personal circumstances.

“You were not dealing with your own life and how to live as a person,” said Magistrate Kossiavelos.

“Taking care of six dogs was a burden that was impossible for you to meet each other.”

She condemned Dowdy for five months and a week behind bars, including a month before driving while she was disqualified.

The punishment was suspended for 18 months and Dowdy was disqualified for six months.

Magistraat Kossiavelos also put an order to prevent Dowdy from having animals in the future.
