Family at the bed of a 9-year-old boy who still recovers after he has been hit by a car on his way to school 12 May, heard the news they have been waiting for since that traumatic day.
The police have arrested the driver who is accused of having driven the child in the empty parking space of a shopping center on Minnesota Avenue in the northeast of DC and then drive away.
The Metropolitan Police Department said after an investigation that it was the 34-year-old Atoya Smith from Hyattsville, Maryland on accusation of leaving the scene of a collision.
The collision let the boy admitted to the hospital with a broken pelvis, bruised lungs, a broken ankle and other injuries.
Davion Rawlings took his son, Zion, to school. They had just made a fast stop in a supermarket in the mall.
“I just kept going, as if we were invisible,” said Rawlings. “I heard a little to get out of the way, but I look back and my son was on the floor.
In the video of the security camera of the incident, Rawlings, who instinctively chases the SUV on foot, can be heard to scream to help with a level of emotion and intensity that everyone hopes that they will never have to use.
He remembered one person, a woman who came to help.
“She was the only person who had the initiative to remove her phone and call 911,” said Rawlings. “While everyone just looks, looking at me crying, pray.”
