Woman arrested after mass stabbing attack at Hamburg train station

A woman was arrested after a stabbing attack on the busy central train station in the German city of Hamburg, had several people injured, some of them in life -threatening state.

The attacker focused on people on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 in the station at around 6 pm on Friday, local time, according to the police.

The station in the center of Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, is an important hub for local, regional and long -distance trains.

The police said that “different” people had life -threatening injuries, but did not give specific figures.

Late on Friday evening, the Hamburg fire brigade said that a total of 17 people were injured in their life with life-threatening injuries, another six with serious injuries and seven with slight injuries, reported the DPA of the German news agency DPA.

The police said that a 39-year-old woman, a German subject, was arrested on the spot without resisting. After watching video images, they claimed that she only carried out the attack. They secured the knife.

There was no immediate indication of a political motive and researchers investigated whether the suspect was perhaps mentally ill, a police spokesperson said.

A High-Speed ​​Intercity Express (Ice) train with its doors open was still on the platform for hours after the attack, but the spokesperson said it was not a crime scene.

Railway operator Deutsche Bahn said it was “deeply shocked” by the attack. Four tracks at the station were closed on Friday evening and a few long -distance trains were delayed or diverted.

Wearing weapons, including knives, is forbidden at the station and at local transport in Hamburg.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s office said that the German leader was shocked by the news and Hamburg told Mayor Peter Tschentscher on Friday evening in a call that “my thoughts are with the victims and their family members”.
