Liverpool -legend Steve Nicol has closed the new summer recruit of the Reds, Florian Wirtz, after his lukewarm display against Burnley.
Despite winning the Premier League title in the past term, the Merseyside Club decided this summer to redecorate the team by spending a lot of money. Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Milos Kerkez, Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak have joined.
Wirtz was the registration of Liverpool before they decided to break it by buying ISAK from Newcastle United on Deadline Day after a long and debilitating transfersaga.
However, the German has a slow start of his life in the Premier League, and was unable to deliver goals, despite starting all four games.
Yet Liverpool enjoyed a great start and he won all four competitions. They struggled to break the stubborn back line of Burnley on Sunday, but eventually managed to win the game thanks to the winner of Mohamed Salah’s stop-time from the penalty spot.
Now speak about ESPN FCNicol says that the 22-year-old was signed for a great fee to show his creativity against stubborn defenses such as that Burnley deployed on Sunday.
Pundit Slams Wirtz
The former Bayer Leverkusen –man ‘no longer came up this weekend, as in the previous three games. His level of performance is therefore a point of ‘concern’ for Liverpool.
Nicol said:
“There is a man who has spent a lot of money on Liverpool this summer that was really brought in for this kind of situation MR. I mean, this was the perfect scenario for him to step on the ball in the last third part and show those little steps, those small movements, those small connections, small Twos-all things that he had not made. Again.
Wirtz did 67 target contributions in all competitions in the past two seasons for Leverkusen. So there was excitement when he was signed this summer. In the first five games this season, however, he succeeded in making only one assist.
History suggests that productive Bundesliga forwards the fight after he had moved to the Premier League, with Christopher Nunku and Jadon Sancho the most important examples of it.
However, Liverpool would hope that it will not be the case for Wirtz, and he will be able to show his best after he has settled in the intensity of English football.
In the meantime, after a 1-0 win over Burnley this weekend, Liverpool will compete against Atletico Madrid in the opening match for Champions League on Wednesday evening.
